      Not a good example from Travelodge

      I am writing this review after stopping at this hotel on Friday 8th November 2013. We were actually in London for the night for a charity event, Fashion For The Brave which was held at The Dorchester Hotel in aid of The Household Cavalry Foundation.

      My partner was a guest speaker at the event as he lost his brother in Afghanistan in 2008 aged just 21. Due to being a guest speaker the charity arranged for our stay and booked us into this Travelodge as it was the best location for The Dorchester.

      We arrived Friday evening and made our way to our rooms on the first floor. We needed up in room 113 which was right next to the exit stairwell and would later proceed to keeping my partner awake all night because of other noisy guests coming and going!

      We arrived, quickly dumped our bags and started to get ready as we only had an hour before we had to leave to get to The Dorchester. I had a nose round the room and couldn't believe it had cost £90 per room! It was a double room but the room was so dated. The carpet was lifting up at the sides by the wall, the floor tiles in the bathroom were coming up, there was mold in the grouting in the bathroom tiles, the toilet roll holder had snapped off the wall and it had a very grubby / worn appearance. We did have a kettle and enough tea / coffee for one drink each. Strangely there was only decaf instead coffee provided which was a little disappointing when I had a monster hangover the next day!

      I usually stay in Covent Garden Travelodge which I have always booked in the sale for around £40 a night, this is still dated but a lot cleaner than the Marylebone equivalent. I was shocked they could charge £90 a night for this dirty, sparse room.

      We had a swift drink in the bar before we left for the event and my red wine wasn't too bad but the bar wasn't anything special. The seating was all stained and worn and the whole place was in need of a refurb.

      Overall we had an amazing night in London but this was due to the event itself and not our stay in the Travelodge. I wouldn't pay to stay here again and it is a shame as its quite a handy central location. Other members of our party stayed further down the corridor and said the same thing, they we also kept awake by the noisy guests.

        Worth another try if I wasn't bothered about the room quality

        We stayed at the Marylebone Travelodge last week for 2 nights. We were really just using the hotel as somewhere to keep our luggage and have a quick sleep so didn't plan on spending a lot of time there. If we had been staying longer or spending more time in the hotel, I would have complained at the service we received at the time.

        The first problem was obvious as soon as we walked into the "Double" room-we had two single beds pushed together. Not necessarily a problem but the beds had a height difference of more than 6 inches! Also the room was cold and noisy due to the ill-fitting single-glazed windows. The room was equipped as per all Travelodge rooms-with tea and coffee making facilities, bath, shower, desk and chair, and somewhere to hang clothes.

        The hotel itself is quite small, with all the rooms on one side (a reason we didn't ask to switch rooms as we assumed they were all the same!). There is a reception desk and small lobby with two computers for internet access. There is the usual Travelodge bar and restaurant in the basement but we did not use these. Also a well-stocked vending machine was available after the bar closed.

        Our room and the communal areas were all clean and the housekeepers came round each morning and even paid attention to our do not disturb sign. The staff on reception were very helpful and check in was very quick indeed.

        The hotel is in an excellent location, directly opposite Marylebone train and tube station. This was ideal for us as it's 3 stops from oxford circus and therefore gave us easy access to all of the tourist sites we wanted to visit. He station is well equipped with cafes and a Marks and Spencer Simply Food so had everything we needed for Room Snacks during our stay. Regents Park is only a 10 minute walk and Sherlock Holmes' house is around 5 minutes away.

        The price of the room was very reasonable; we paid £89 for two nights as we booked more than 21 days in advance. The price can rise to around £60-£80 if you book last minute but it is still cheaper than the Travelodges nearer to the Covent garden/Leicester square areas of the city. We paid extra for a late checkout at 2pm on our last day and an early check in is also available on request. I ordered this online at the time of booking.

        In summary, the hotel was fine for a couple of nights when we didn't intend to spend much time there but if I was planning to stay longer or spend more time in the room, I would pay more to stay elsewhere

          An enjoyable and affordable stay in the centre of London.

          Marylebone Travelodge is situated in central London, next to Marylebone mainline and tube station. Don't let this put you off though... You can't hear the trains from your room (and I had a room which faced the station). I chose to stay at the Marylebone Travelodge due to it's proximity to the train station. Our train goes to the Marylebone station so this hotel is handy as I can book-in and drop off my bag/s without having to lug them around London. Also, as the tube station is there too, it's handy that I can walk out of the tube station and practically straight into the hotel after a tiring day in the city.

          I booked my room online at www.travelodge.co.uk for £69 a night (arriving on a Monday and departing on a Wednesday), paying an extra £10 for early check-in. My train got into Marylebone at 11.25am and so I didn't want to be handing around or trudging around London with my bag. I checked in around 11.55am and was greeted by a staff member as soon as I walked through the door and up the steps (I didn't count, but there's around 20 steps up into reception, but there is also a stairlift to reception and to the bar/restaurant, should it be needed).

          There was a bit of delay in checking in due to a computer problem, but it only took 5-10 minutes. I was asked if I required breakfast (£7.50 each, which can be booked online or when checking in), but I wanted breakfast at Covent Garden so declined and I was handed 2 keycards (there was 2 of us in the room).

          Our room was on the 2nd floor and this can be access by either the stairs of the lift. We took the lift as a trip to London often involves a lot of walking!

          The keycard easily opened the door (I have had one or two problems with these in the past) and we walked into the room.

          The room was painted white with Travelodge's trademark blue carpet on the floor. The twin beds were in the centre of the room, but I was surprised to see that they were pushed together like a double bed and there was no way of parting them. A desk, along with a cream bucket chair, was between the beds and the window (which had been left slightly open for us due to the heat). An open wardrobe was set into one wall (containing clothes hangers, a spare pillow and a spare large towel), with an LCD TV and a mirror on another wall.

          The bathroom was small and contained the usual toilet, bath/shower and sink, along with small & large towels, 2 plastic cups and a tiny soap.

          Travelodge believe in providing a simply room with only the necessities, so it cuts costs and lessens the price customers pay for the rooms.

          Apart from the beds being so close together and the sink taps needing a damn good scrub, the room was as expected - clean & tidy. I always take the spare pillow from the wardrobe as the beds only ever have 1 pillow per person and I just don't find that comfortable.

          Each twin bed also had a book light next to it which you could manoeuvre to suit your needs (and are handy if you want to read, but your friend/partner wants to sleep). They're quite close to the bed though, so you do have to be careful your don't catch them.

          Oh, I nearly forgot... There was a handy bottle opener on the side of the desk which was quite handy should we have taken a couple of bottles up to the room.

          Also, I don't know if it was because of the hot weather, but the open wardrobe had a standing fan in it, but we didn't feel the need to us it as the room cooled down with the window open (although it was a bit noisy with the traffic).

          On the first night of my stay (I stayed two nights), I got back to the hotel quite late after a concert (nearly midnight), but still got greeted by the member of staff behind the desk.

          The hotel seemed quiet throughout my stay. I did hear a baby cry at one stage and I saw a man at one of the two internet computers in reception, but that was all. Though I'm sure there was more of us than that staying at the hotel!

          Talking about the internet... If you'd got your own laptop or wifi enabled device with you then you could purchase wifi time. I didn't need to do this on this during this stay (although I did during a previous stay at a Travelodge with no problems) and had I needed to have used the internet then I could have used the coin operated internet computers in reception.

          So all in all, I had a comfortable sleep on both nights and I felt that the stay was well worth the money, especially considering it is a central London hotel. With Marylebone station on the doorstep (with its shops and food places) and Baker Street station and more shops a short walk away (along with places such as Madame Tussauds), I would definitely recommend a stay at the Marylebone Travelodge.

            Great budget hotel in central London

            Travelodges are not all created equal, despite what you read on the website.

            Some are converted office blocks, others are more luxurious hotels or properties acquired by the Travelodge chain in their apparently unstoppable expansion.

            The Travelodge Marylebone is one of the "better" Travelodges in my opinion. Better because it is a custom built hotel, having formerly been the Ramada Marylebone. Having stayed in many Travelodges over the years, this one seems a cut above the rest and when I stayed you could tell it was once part of a different hotel chain.

            I travel to London several times a year to visit family and friends and given how expensive it can be to stay in the capital, Travelodges have saved me a small fortune, particularly during sales when rooms can be had for as little as £9 per night. However, even if you end up having to pay £49 per night for a room at a Travelodge in Central London, you have got yourself a bargain.

            I stayed at this hotel in August last year and have two further bookings this year - one for February and one again for August. I note that the hotel is currently undergoing refurbishment which will continue this month and into February so I have added an update at the bottom of this review following my February visit.


            The Travelodge Marylebone is situated just off the Marylebone Road and right beside Marylebone Station, and the Bakerloo Line Underground station. However it is not on the main road, which means you don't hear the noise from the constant stream of traffic on the constantly busy A501 nearby.

            For me this hotel is a winner because of its location. I travel from Edinburgh by train and arrive at Kings Cross Station. I can take a 205 bus directly to Marylebone station which is perfect. The bus actually leaves the Marylebone Road and stops adjacent to the station so stay on it and get off to save yourself having to cross an extremely busy road.

            You can also walk to Baker Street Station and Edgware Road Station in 5-10 minutes giving you the choice of more tube lines.

            THE HOTEL

            Reception is up some stairs upon arrival at the hotel, but there is a lift for wheelchair users.

            There are two lifts in the hotel and I found I didn't have to wait too long for them when I stayed.

            When you arrive at the hotel you have already paid so all you need is your key and room number and you are away. I found the staff here to be extremely friendly and helpful.

            There is a bar in the basement area of the hotel which I visited once. It was very quiet however and somewhat lacking in atmosphere. Being in the basement didn't help as there were no windows.

            Food is served in the restaurant which is located on the same level as reception and is far more pleasant an area with windows and therefore lots of natural light. We had breakfast here which costs £7.50 for a hot buffet breakfast, with children eating free. This is a great deal I think, but unfortunately I am not a huge fan of Travelodge breakfasts really and only got it this day to the necessity of an early start.

            Bar meals are available here all day and drinks can be brought to your table from the bar. I would prefer a single bar/dining area however as this tends to feel more family friendly and also tends to have a little more atmosphere!

            There are also vending machines selling soft drinks, snacks and a small selection of toiletry items, in case you have forgotten any. I wouldn't advise using them however as there are cheaper options nearby.

            The hotel is a complete non-smoking zone and Travelodge will charge you for cleaning if you smoke in your room and even reserve the right to "bar" you from their hotels for smoking in your room so my advice to smokers is go outside for your fix.

            THE ROOM

            I found rooms here to be of a reasonable size - I have stayed in larger rooms in a Travelodge but for me and my daughter the room size was perfectly adequate. There was a large double bed, bedside table, desk and chair and television. Don't expect to receive the full complement of Sky channels however - you get the terrestrial channels and a handful of extra TV channels and some radio stations and that's your lot.

            There is also a large storage area with hanging space and shelves, along with space for your suitcase.

            The bathroom was pleasant - it wasn't a typical Travelodge bathroom and one could tell it had once been part of a different hotel chain - however it was looking a little tired and one of the taps on the wash hand basin was decidedly loose. Given the hotel is being refurbished, one would expect these issues to have been dealt with.

            The bed was large and very comfortable - my daughter and I were able to have enough space without bumping into one another. Beds have two pillows and each room usually has one spare pillow with other spares available upon request at reception. We requested an extra one at check-in to save us having to go downstairs again to get one - a tip I recommend you use if staying at a Travelodge and requiring extra pillows.

            There is a window, which like most hotels these days, doesn't open fully. I stayed in August and didn't find the room too hot. There is also a small wall heater for colder weather.

            The room has a kettle and two mugs plus instant coffee, some teabags, sweetener and dried creamers.

            WiFi access is available in your hotel room but is expensive, especially if you are only staying for one or two nights. I have not used it at this hotel so cannot give an opinion on the quality of the service.

            Pets are allowed in some hotel rooms but only at the discretion of the hotel manager. As I have no pets I cannot comment on the policy of this hotel, so my advice would be to telephone the hotel before booking if you want to take a pet with you. All pets are charged for in the room and the current cost is £10 per animal per booking, with a maximum of two animals in the room. You must also advise the hotel directly that you will be bringing pets once you have made the booking.

            There are no telephones or hairdryers in your room - hairdryers can be borrowed from reception however and if you need to contact reception you have to go down and speak to them directly. This is my one gripe with Travelodges as you can find yourself standing in a large queue at busy times to deal with a minor issue.

            There is one bad thing about the rooms at this hotel however. There are no Family Rooms on offer here - only double, twin and single rooms. So sadly this hotel isn't going to be a great option for couples travelling with children - you would have to book two rooms instead of one here.

            GETTING ABOUT

            I used to live in London so I know my way about very well. I enjoy visiting now and not having to drive (not having to worry about the Congestion Charge, bus lane cameras and the like is a great relief!) and find the public transport available around this area to be excellent.

            As well as having Marylebone tube station virtually on the doorstep of this hotel, you are a short walking distance from Baker Street Station (Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Circle, Bakerloo and Jubilee lines) and in heading west, Edgware Road Station (Hammersmith & City, Circle and District lines). As a result its easy to get to almost any part of central London by tube.

            The bus service is excellent here too. As well as the 205 bus I already mentioned, buses are available on the Marylebone Road, on Lisson Grove and at Baker Street. All bus routes in the area are featured on this excellent map from the Transport for London website:-

            I would advise you register with this website and sign up for e-mails from Travelodge, which will advise you of the many room sales they have available throughout the year. At peak times it can be very difficult to get online and get those £9 rooms, but I was able to book 4 nights in August this year for just £19 per night, which is just incredible for Central London.

            If you buy a Saver Rate room you cannot change your booking or get a refund - you pay upfront upon booking. Insurance is available for £1 per booking. I always buy it but have never had to claim so I cannot comment on that part of the booking.

            Rates can vary enormously for this hotel - I have paid £9 one one night and £49 for another. At peak times you can expect the rate to be a lot higher - I have seen rooms at £92 here. Weekends also tend to be more expensive than during the week so if you want it for a weekend my advice is to book early.

            You can also making bookings by phone but you will have to pay the full rate - saver rates are not available this way so my advice is use the website.


            I am going to keep this simply and say I love this Travelodge - it truly is a gem out of some lacklustre hotels in London. There are some in possibly better locations, especially if you like to be in the heart of the West End, but if you are happy to buy a One Day Travelcard and hop on the tube for a few stops, then this is perfect, and is also far quieter at night.

            I would highly recommend you consider this for a budget option when visiting London.


            I stayed at this hotel once again in February 2009 and refurbishment work was coming on well but not completed. Rooms had been refitted with new desks, flat screen LCD TVs on the wall and new beds. The new beds had a wooden headboard that incorporated lighting and a couple of very small shelves - there are, however, no bedside tables.

            The bathrooms have new showers but apart from that are the same as they were last year. The showers are pretty powerful.

            The common areas were in the process of being refurbished with new carpetting and one of the lifts was out of service.

            It looked as if the refurbishment work was nearly over - I checked out on Monday 23rd February and would imagine most of the work would have been completed in that final week in February. I shall be returning again in August this year and will update once more then.
