Disadvantages: needs updating

When booking a budget holiday in the UK, it well worthwhile to check out Travelodge and see whether or not you can get a budget room. In the past it hasn't been unknown to get a hotel room for as little as a tenner, which is pretty excellent if you are on a very tight budget. More recently, you can get a Travelodge room for around twenty pounds a night. For that you get the basics and it might not be a great location.

For our recent family holiday we booked a couple of Travelodge's around Wales and the surrounding country. The first we visited was a Travelodge on the outskirts of the lovely village of Ludlow. The 'Lodge is just on the A49 and just within walking distance of the centre of town, however, the hotel has a 'Tuffins' convenience store and petrol station next door as well as a pub/restaurant called 'Badgers' run by Pedigree.

The hotel, like most Travelodges is very basic. You get what you paid for which is good if you plan to spend most of your time away from the hotel itself. It is extremely basic, but comfortable and clean. The twin family room that I shared with my brother was large and overlooked the car park.

There was no lift in the hotel, so we had to lug our cases up a flight of stairs. This would have been no good if you were old or inform. The room was undecorated and had one double bed and a pullout sofa bed.

The room also has the usual tea making facilities and a large shower/ bath. There was some evidence of scuff marks on the walls and the usual wear and tear, but on the whole it was pretty good.

If you can get a Travelodge room for twenty quid then you've bagged yourself a bargain, but pay any more than that then you're probably being ripped off. If I paid full whack, say seventy or eighty quid for the room then I would feel pretty cheesed off. Then again, you're really only paying for somewhere to sleep, so don't expect any pampering or saunas in a Travelodge.

In all, the hotel was quiet and clean with all you need in the surrounding area very close at hand, just don't expect the Ritz.

Summary: A place to stay - but not for too long
