Advantages: Convenient if flight is early, reasonably priced food in the bar
Disadvantages: Poor night's sleep, noisy, uncomfortable mattress, facilities not great
I've only used this hotel once and although it fulfilled its purpose, I won't be in a hurry to go back there. Earlier this year my fiancé and I went on holiday to Cyprus, and as our flight was an early morning one we decided to extend our holiday and travel to the airport the night before to stay at one of the airport hotels. We had a look online and the Travelodge was the best price, offering a room for the night for £29.
I booked it online at a non-refundable saver rate of £29, and received my confirmation by email. Sorted. The night before our holiday we had a friend take us to the hotel and we used the computerised check-in service. This was surprisingly easy to use and cut out the waiting time for the queue which seemed to be taking over reception.
We got to our rooms which were what you'd expect from Travelodge - decent size, fairly basic, nothing to write home about, dropped off our bags and freshened up to go down to the bar for a meal and drink to celebrate the start of our holiday.
The queue in reception had quietened down so we spoke to the lady at the desk to see if we could book ourselves in on the shuttle service to the airport in the morning. This cost us around £7 for the two of us, and was easy enough. She was very helpful and friendly, but told us the buses sometimes book up quite soon, so we were glad we'd booked it before dinner and not afterwards.
The bar seemed very small in comparison to the number of rooms, and considering there's nothing else to do in the area (with it being solely for the airport), it was very full of various groups of families, stag dos, couples and single people occupying large tables to themselves. We managed to get a table and my partner got us some drinks and ordered the food. It felt like he'd been gone forever as there was a huge queue at the bar, and the drinks were about £4 for a bottle of Magners.
The food was reasonably priced, and we both had the same burger with all the trimmings. This was under £8 and was really filling with bacon and onion rings and plenty of chips. We didn't hang around after the meal because it wasn't the nicest bar with lots of spillages and it was crammed with people at this point. So we thought we'd free up our table and go upstairs.
I tried to get a bottle of water for the room in case we were thirsty overnight (it was June and quite hot), but the vending machines had all sold old so I got a can of coke each for us instead. The room was really hot so it was difficult to sleep, and this wasn't helped by the fact we only had one pillow each so couldn't get comfy. There was quite a lot of noise from the corridors, but the main issue was the mattress which gave us both backache, and we woke each other up every time the other person moved! It was one of the worst nights sleep I've ever had!
The following morning I was actually happy when my alarm went off around 6am, mainly because our holiday was about to begin, but partly out of joy to be leaving the Travlodge. I put the kettle on then jumped in the shower. The shower and bathroom facilities were fine. I started making a cup of tea, but realised as I went to pour the milk in that there wasn't any! There were teabags and coffee sachets, but no milk sachets. This just summed up our stay to be honest!
The shuttle service was reliable and got us to the airport terminal on time and without any hassle. We just paid the driver directly. Luckily, the holiday we had was much better than the Travelodge experience!
Summary: Not the best start to your holiday but a bargain nonetheless
