      Very helpful

Dave, my partner, has now got a job as an IT Consultant and as such has to travel all over the United Kingdom. I usually try and help him find a decent hotel using www.smoothhound.co.uk and, if its convenient I have been know to accompany him. This is how I found The Watermill Hotel in Paisley. Dave had got to visit Renfrew Council so I sorted out the hotel for him and offered to go with him for some company on the drive, which would be about four hours. I discovered using the information given on the Smoothhound site that the rooms would be ensuite with TV, telephone, trouser press, tea and coffee making facilities and hair dryer and that the hotel would have a licensed bar, licensed restaurant, ironing facilities, free parking and that we could pay by credit card. Well that seemed to cover everything! ** The Hotel ** The Watermill is built on the site of 17th century flourmill and has a river with a weir right next to it. We were on the front of the hotel and so couldn't hear the noise of the water, but in the rooms on the back of the hotel the noise was deafening! The building has been restored to retain its original character and has 49 bedrooms all of which are ensuite. There is a lift but it is tiny and wouldn't move when loaded with Dave, one case, and myself as it was 'overloaded' and it is supposed to take eight people! It didn't do my ego any good at all you know, mind you how eight people would have got in I don't know! They'd have to be very good friends! The Watermill is five minutes from Glasgow Airport, ten minutes from Glasgow Town Centre, five minutes walk from Gilmour Street Railway Station, has a 55 space car park and is situated near to a 40 space public car park. It is also sited on a busy crossroads at the entrance to Paisley town centre but I didn't find the noise a problem at all. ** The Bedroom ** The bedroom was quite spacious wi
th plenty of hanging space for our clothes, but very little drawer space. There was, however, a deep shelf over the top of the hanging rail so that sufficed for jumpers, undies etc. There was a desk next to the window with a large table lamp on it, in case you needed to do some work. There was a mirror on the wall next to the desk and a further full-length mirror on the wall by the bathroom. The bed was comfortable with plenty of covers and pillows. It had a bedside table on either side with a bedside lamp, clock radio and the telephone. Unfortunately our telephone wasn't working so Dave had to borrow the key to a spare room to go and download his e-mail onto the laptop. They didn't change him for his calls though, whether this was deliberate or an oversight I don't know. The tea tray was on a pull out drawer in the unit with the television on, but there was no available socket there to plug in the kettle so I had to put the kettle on the floor on the other side of the room to boil it, which wouldn't be satisfactory if you had a young child. The room was very warm when we arrived. The window was quite small with only a very small opening pane, but it was enough to cool down the room to an agreeable temperature. ** The Bathroom ** There was a decent sized bath with a shower over it. The shower was fixed to the wall in one position so it was a bit difficult to shower without getting my hair wet, but I managed. The hairdryer was mounted on the wall in the bathroom next to the mirror, which I thought was an excellent idea. The toilet was very close to the wall, which made it rather difficult to manoeuvre if you know what I mean. If you don't, tough luck, I'm not going into detail! The towel rail had been attached to the wall above the radiator so the towels were lovely and warm and of course dried quickly too. ** Hammils Restaurant ** The restauran
t in the hotel is apparently one of the best local places to eat and we had no reason to doubt that! The first evening Dave started with salmon parcels with prawns and I had a melon basket with a champagne sorbet. We both had roast of the day to follow, which was lamb and it melted in the mouth. The second evening we stuck to the same starters and then had steaks to follow, again they were perfect. We couldn't manage a sweet on either evening, I'm sad to say! The two evening meals for both of us came to £51.90 and included a glass of wine each at both meals. The breakfast was either served to the table if there were only a few guests or a self-service buffet when the hotel filled up. It consisted of cereals, fruit juice, prunes or grapefruit together with tea or coffee and toast. The cooked part consisted of sausages, bacon, egg, beans, hash brown and a kind of pancake made from what tasted like potato and it was gorgeous! ** Millers Bar ** There was a large airy lounge bar with plenty of seats and two large televisions, which were not so loud as to be intrusive. Here they served a wide selection of drinks and bar snacks were also available if you weren't having your evening meal in the hotel. ** The Price ** On to the most important bit - the price. The cost of our room on and bed and breakfast basis was £69.50 per night for the two of us, so it wasn't cheap but then again it wasn't extortionate either. ** The Address and Telephone Number ** The Watermill Hotel Lonend Paisley Renfrewshire PA1 1SR 0141 889 3201 There isn't a specific web site for the hotel at the moment but the people who own it have only recently taken over and are upgrading some of the facilities so that may include getting on the Internet too.
