The Westley Hotel in Acocks Green, Birmingham, is very proud of itself. I'm not sure why. It is easy enough to find, close to the A45 and Birmingham International airport. There is plenty of car parking space around the back and it is a member of the Best Western chain. They do have a very nice Amdega conservatory, but as it looks out onto the 1C Birmingham bus route, it lacks a little romance. Reception is rather dismal, with dark carpets and furnishings and dark wood everywhere. The staff will help you if you tell them what to do, but don't expect proactive service. It is one of those hotels that has been converted from a pub at some time in the dim and distant past so there are lots of corridors and steps. There is no lift and no ground floor bedrooms, so if you have mobility difficulties you may want to check ahead. The rooms, oh my goodness, the rooms. I've stayed in four, and they all share the same characteristics, but different shapes. The curtains and carpets are well past their sell by dates, and the bathrooms are, at best, tired. The decoration has been carried out by a blind mad man. The walls and soft furninshings convey a soft Monet style pastel feel to the room, and on the ceiling of every room, including the bathrooms, is a bright, floral wallpaper. I don't know why. Each room is reasonably big, but with a tiny bed and a teeny weeny TV that I have to put my glasses on to see from a bed. They boast digital TV, but then give you a choice of just terrestrial channels, sport, and Granada Breeze. Granada Breeze for goodness sake. What's that about? The shortbread biscuits are an affront to shortbread. Mr Walker would cry. If you are travelling alone someone will nip in to your double room in advance and remove any extra cups, coffee or toiletries. Oh and there appears to be a one pillow per guest policy as well. You do get three towels, one is a small bath, the o
ther two are flannels with attitude. The food. Do I really have to tell you about the food? They have pictures of it on the menu. Doesn't that give you all the information you need? They are very proud of their carvery though. It is, they claim, the best in the midlands. by way of supporting evidence this from their in room literature "Scotch meats and linen serviettes!!". Yes that's two, count 'em two, exclaimation marks that they feel their serviettes deserve. It isn't as bad as that build up would imply. The food is good solid pub type fayre, and is perfectly edible. Sleep, however, is not something they want you to do. The mattresses have all seen better days, and plenty of them. The beds creak and squeak, every one of them. Oh, and if that wasn't enough the Deja Vu hard house disco takes place on a Thursday night, and grab a granny events can be attended on Sundays. These are such classy evenings that you can venture forth into the car park where the clientele are getting quietly blasted on cheap duty free booze from cross channel trips before venturing back inside for stimulating conversation and quality musical accompaniment. This is not what you need to be happening directly below your room when you need to be up and working early in the morning. So is the Westley better than sleeping in your car? Well, it depends on your car.
