      A nice treat

Last week I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights for a wedding. I had previously stayed here for a night before the venue was decided and my review is written on both experiences which were similar which was good as it's nice to see everyone got the same level of service as a wedding party.
At the end of the review I shall add a bit about the wedding for anyone who may be considering this as a venue.

When we visited last week it was dark when we arrived and we didn't find it very easily. Unless you are familiar with the area I would definitely suggest a map or sat nav to help you find the way there.
I think driving is the easiest way to get here as it's a bit remote and has plenty of free parking but if you don't drive if you can find your way to Linton, a taxi from there to the hotel will cost £7.

The average price for this hotel seems to be around £150 per double room per night including breakfast.
The driveway seems never ending and when you arrive there are well kept gardens and a large gravel car park. The building is beautiful and really well kept. The setting is peaceful and scenic.
The reception area is fairly small, we were greeted by a couple of young men working there who were so friendly and helpful. They gave us our rooms keys, assisted with luggage, explained a few things about the facilities, breakfast and check in and out.
To the right of reception is a little lounge area which is lovely and warm and comfortable. Behind this is a bar area and to the left is a breakfast room and function room.

The rooms are available in classic, executive and deluxe. I was in a lot of these rooms and each one is similar with lovely decor and beautiful furnishings. They come with large beds (mine wasn't at all comfortable but I think I was unlucky here as everyone else said there's were very comfortable), they are well made up with plenty of lovely cushions and throws which are turned back in the evening ready for you to get into bed.
The bathrooms vary in size, all seem to be mainly white with some black detailing and have hot towel racks with plenty of towels, dressing gowns and slippers were hung in the wardrobe and toiletries, a sewing kit and glasses could also be found in the bathroom.
The overhead showers could do with being a bit more powerful but apart from this the bathrooms were nice, clean and warm.

The bedrooms had a large flat screen television on the wall with plenty of satellite channels. Each room also has a DVD player with DVD library so there is plenty of entertainment.
There is plenty of wardrobe space, an iron, ironing board, trouser press, hairdryer, kettle, a good choice of hot drinks, bottled water, a few of the latest magazines, lots of information on the hotel and a few leaflets and guide books for the local area and York.
Each room also has a desk, chair, a small table with chairs, a mirror and chest of drawers.
I found the rooms well equipped and with plenty of storage space. The furnishings in the executive and deluxe rooms were a little more elaborate but the classic rooms were still very classy.

Free wi-fi is available in the rooms and communal areas of the hotel.

There is a small gym at the back of the hotel, it has all the equipment you would expect such as treadmills, exercise bikes and weights and is large enough for the size of the hotel.
Opposite the gym is an indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi.

You can also book a spa day or break, the spa offers massages, facials, wraps etc.
A spa day for 2 including use of all facilities and a spa treatment as well as an afternoon tea is £109 during the week. This would be a lovely day out for friends and not a bad price. Offers change all the time and some include an evening meal or night at the hotel.

The breakfast can be served to your bedroom or in the dining room. There was a lot of choice on the card for breakfast to your room with vegetarian options included. I decided to go down to the dining room and had cereal, a croissant and a full english. It was all very tasty although my coffee wasn't that hot.
The wedding meal was very tasty with fishcakes for a starter, followed by a roast beef main course and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. This was then followed by some fudge and more cold coffee.

There are several menus, afternoon tea is available, The Drawing Room serves light bites such as sandwiches and posh burgers, most things are between £8-12.
The Georgian restaurant is more fine dining. The menu is seasonal and the produce locally sourced, the menu looks really impressive (with impressive prices too) starters are from £15, mains from £19 and desserts from £8.50. This is fine for a treat but I am quite a plain eater and to be honest everything was just too fussy for me and I didn't know what half of the dishes were.

A four course Sunday lunch costs £27.50.
If you're staying here and like something more simple there is a lovely little pub in Linton called the Windmill which I would recommend. It was steak night when we went and the others got a steak dinner with wine for £13. I opted for the chicken and leek pie which was only around £8 and delicious. On a nice day you could walk down to this pub but I wouldn't like to do the long driveway out of the hotel in the dark or cold.

As a wedding venue, you couldn't ask for much more. For a normal break away I think due to the location one or two nights is enough. They did tell us that after check out we could leave our bags in a room if we wanted to use the gym and pool before we left which was good.
I think it's a place to go as a treat, it would be a nice place to go for a peaceful night away for an anniversary or something but I think it's a bit remote for anyone who wants to do any shopping or sightseeing.
The place is very classy and charming and I would definitely like to go back again...... for a special occasion.

As a wedding venue, I think this is a great choice depending on the amount of guests. There were around 70 guests at the wedding I was at and I think for this number or less it is a fantastic option. For more guests than this I think it may be a bit on the small side.

The ceremony was lovely and the room can be decorated in any way you wish. The hotel took care of everything and the room looked beautiful for the ceremony. After the ceremony canapes were served in the bar area, seating is limited here but this didn't matter too much as people were in and out having photographs taken in front of the hotel etc.
The room was then set out for the meal, again they did a fantastic job of the room and the meal was beautiful.
After the meal it was back to the bar again while they moved the room around for the evening reception.
The whole thing went so smoothly and without any problems, the staff were so helpful and in the run up to the wedding they were very good at keeping in touch with the couple and there families regarding planning and tasting sessions for the menu etc.

The bridal suite is lovely and spacious. The bride wanted to wait until the evening but we did persuade her to go in a little earlier for a few photographs. There are doors which open out onto a large balcony area above the main entrance which can be seen in the photograph of the building below.
There are plenty of wedding packages to choose from, varying in cost depending on the day and number of guests. An example offer they have at the moment is next May a Friday or Sunday wedding with 5 rooms for the night and 50 guests is currently £5000. I think this is a good price for such a nice venue.

I think this is a superb wedding venue but you may need to help your guests with getting there. For example at this wedding a coach went from York city centre to the venue for the guests. This way some that were travelling from around the country could choose a cheaper hotel in the city centre to stay in.

A wonderful place to escape to!

I have to thank my best friend for introducing me to about Wood Hall. She contacted me to tell me that she had found the perfect location for her wedding. It was really important to her to have a beautiful Yorkshire venue which really did feel English, especially as she now lives overseas. Wood Hall was definitely a winner in so many ways.

Arriving at Wood Hall is an experience in itself! Wood Hall is located just outside Wetherby in Yorkshire. As you get to the hotel drive, you have to drive along a narrow road that seems to be cut into the hill and looks over the stunning scenery without anything that really disturbs the views at all. You really do feel that you are arriving at a very private retreat.

The hotel used to be a retreat for a wealthy family and is set in acres of land that seems to be very secluded from the rest of the world. It feels very private as you arrive with nothing overlooking you. The only thing that the hotel overlooks is the lovely scenery. The front of the hotel has a lovely pebbled driveway to the front that was used for the wedding once the ceremony had finished. The walled garden to the side has the same fantastic views and is a lovely place for both photos and for champagne and canapés. We were lucky enough to have a lovely sunny day and the whole wedding party really did feel like they were at a party at a grand country house.

As well as the stunning grounds, the venue itself stands up well. It has been maintained to a high modern standard. As we arrived in reception to check in we were greeted by a member of staff who dealt with our arrival a d check-in with ease. She then showed us to our room which I felt was a lovely personal touch which meant that you weren't being pushed from one member of staff to another. This was the standard of service that we received throughout our stay- personal and attentive at all times.

Our room was a lovely double room that was well decorated and modern. A large, comfortable bed with clean, modern-style linen took up most of the space. The bathroom was small but perfect. I don't get to have a bath very often so the luxury of a nice bath, with excellent toiletries was a real treat. The attention to detail was just stunning. I remember being really impressed by the quality of the glasses that they left in the bathroom for us to use. Not just the cheap glasses covered in a plastic bag to show that they were hygienic but heavy, well shaped and designed glasses.

The wedding was held in a room that they used for the wedding service itself - it was lovely and intimate and really just helped to make the day special. The room available for the wedding breakfast was well thought out. The food was lovely. The staff really did help to make the day special for my friend and her husband. They still talk about it now.

The evening event was a disco, more food and music. However, because it was such a lovely night there were a number of us who just hung around in the grounds, chatting, drinking and having a lovely time. It was one of the most beautiful weddings I had been to and the relaxed feeling of the event had a lot to do with the stunning venue.

We stayed for two nights and the breakfast is highly recommended with a really good choice of breakfast items including full English, continental, mueslis etc. The rooms that we had breakfast in looked over the stunning scenery so even on your last day, you can just keep drinking it all in.

Wood Hall is part of the Handpicked Hotels chain and it is really clear that the chain prides itself on quality and beautiful locations. Our stay was for two nights. Wood Hall is not cheap - the drinks and food are expensive. However if you want to spoil someone this is the place to do it. The Handpicked Hotels website has lots of useful information and great pictures. If you sign up to the mailing list, you get some great deals emailed to you for all of the Handpicked venues.
