1001 Carpet Fresh
Having recently read a shake n vac review on here it came to me that this is something that I clearly do not do enough... So I went on a mission to find something to freshen up my carpets... (Anything to delay hoovering for that little while longer - haha)...
I happily discovered this product in poundland, in the winter spice scent on the packaging we're told this is a limited edition, and this shows up apples, and cinnamon sticks. Having a candle on the go that is also apple and cinnamon scented I though this would be a nice mix in my front room...
The tube has 400g in it, and a blue lid that will turn to allow a 'pour' function, or a 'sprinkle' function. The package does require you to push down on a clearly marked section to break the seal, and I found this very easy - using a screwdriver (I think that if you used a finger it may bend / break a nail). I have to admit when administering the product I didn't notice much difference between the two options, but I always find it fun to shake it around... The back of the packaging says to sprinkle it from about 15 inches above the carpet, and then shake from side to side, and then hoover it all up.
Well sprinkling it over my front room was fun enough, then came the hard work - clearing it up... It took me a little longer to hoover as some of the white powder took a little getting up - but we're not talking very much longer maybe two minutes across the front room and hall way.
I did leave the product for about five minutes even though the packaging didn't say anything about this, I just thought it would leave more time for the scent and deodorising properties to work their magic...
Well the carpet obviously looks fluff free - but I'd say this was thanks to the hoover itself, and the room does smell a little sweeter... I haven't sprayed anything or lit a candle for a few days, and this seems to have helped the 'fusty' smell of a house that is in the middle of winter... I'm still opening windows to get air through but not as often as I would in summer so this really is a welcome bit of freshness.
I do have one criticism though - it doesn't go very far, it managed my from room, and maybe half of my tiny hallway, so stock up if you're planning to do the whole house.
I would definitely recommend this as it was cheaper than the shake n vac product that I saw and the scent is to me preferable to the scent of the summer berries version that I also picked up.
After citrus, my next favourite scent for home fragrance is probably what is collectively known as 'wild berry' and can include raspberry, blackberry, cherry and strawberry. It's quite a strong smell and I think that is what is needed for effective home fragrance, as it means it has a chance of sticking around! So being a previously loyal fan of Shake n Vac, I decided to try this when I spotted it in my newly opened Poundland some weeks back (it is exclusive to Poundland apparently). I have used 1001 carpet shampoo numerous times before and been delighted with it, I love the general berry smell and it was only a pound. What's not to be happy about?
It comes in a strong cardboard tube (containing 400g of product) that is mainly bright yellow, as is typical of 1001. It tells us this product is called "Carpet Fresh carpet and room deodoriser" and it claims to quickly and easily eliminate odours. The lid has sections cut out of it, one of which lets you push open a security tab; this becomes the main opening through which the product is dispensed, and you can choose to use a single large opening or three small separate ones (by slide action). The back of the tube has the usual product, safety and usage information.
The product itself is a sort of gritty white powder. Best way to describe it is to compare to Shake n Vac, which is very fine and light, almost fluffy. I was a little dismayed to see this type of powder, as usually it means it will not coat the carpet so well, leaving many areas untouched and therefore un-freshened. To use it, you simply tilt the tube about 15 inches above the carpet and shake from side to side, then vacuum. As is usual for me, I leave it at least 10 minutes or so to give the scent time to cling, though it doesn't state you should do this.
When I opened it and got a sniff, I thought it was just delicious! It's quite sweet, but not sickly. The most noticeable berry smell in it for me is raspberry. I was really impressed with the smell luckily, since you can't have a sneaky sniff of this one in the shop due to the packaging! As I expected, the powder didn't come out as fine as Shake n Vac, and therefore did not cover the entire carpet. But, I thought I'd give it a fair chance so off I went for a cuppa while it done its magic. When I walked back into the room to vacuum it up, I could smell the berry really strongly so I was hopeful it would remain noticeable.
Then I found the first advantage this has over Shake n Vac - it vacuums up much more easily! Probably because it's thicker and doesn't bed in as deep. Now, this could also be a disadvantage if it means the scent just disappears along with the powder. But - and now for the next big bonus - it doesn't. For the rest of the day, the berry fragrance was highly noticeable, I never stopped smelling it. I admit I have never noticed the citrus fragrance of Shake n Vac as much as I notice this one. So the thicker powder is not a disadvantage at all in my book.
The next morning when I came downstairs I got a slight whiff of it, which further impressed me. Although if you wanted the scent constantly I think you would definitely need to use it daily. I use a lot of fragrance products, so I just use this every few days in my living room only, for a beautiful berry burst! As such one tube will last me over a week. For £1 I think this is just wonderful, and I now buy this one alternating with the Neutradol original one every week instead of Shake n Vac (sorry Glade!). I'd never had any complaints about Shake n Vac previously, but the scent of this one is just beautiful. And of course it is a better price, which is always a winner!
