Bobble Water Bottle
by GoodValue101 I recently purchased one of these bottles for my daughter to take on a camping trip. She was doing her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and was specifically told to take a 1 litre bottle. We looked at water bottles online and she liked the look of the Bobble bottle. I saw that it was BPA free so went ahead and ordered despite the high ... price. When it arrived I was surprised at how flimsy the plastic was but I took the bottle out of the packaging and filled it as per the enclosed instructions. My daughter was keen to try the bottle straightaway so she took it to school the next day. She came home very disappointed saying that the bottle leaked. I looked again at the instructions and my husband double checked and we could not stop the bottle from leaking unless it was under-filled. This defeated the object as part of the reason we had chosen this bottle was for the 1 litre capacity. I decided to look at some reviews online, something I usually do before purchase but did not do on this occasion. I soon found that other people had the same problem so I decided to return the bottle for a full refund. These bottles are expensive and I expected better for the price. I have previously purchased Nalgene water bottles which are not only BPA free but also dishwasher safe. My daughter took 2x500 ml bottles on her trip and I will order a 1 litre one for future use. Argos Colour Match Extra Large Bath Towels
by sas87 I had my last baby at home, after planning a VERY last minute home birth - we'd only moved in 2 weeks previously (yes, I'm a bit crazy!). Like all recent movers we had hardly any towels as we took the opportunity of moving to chuck away all our tatty old non-matching towels. This was a big mistake as with a home birth you need as many ... tatty, old non-matching towels you can find! So we decided to buy some cheap new towels for the purpose of the birth, thinking we could chuck them afterwards if necessary without losing too much. We went to faithful old Argos, and got a few pairs of their Colour Match bath sheets. They were originally £11.99 but at the time reduced to £8 - and £4 per towel seems very reasonable! The Colour Match range at Argos covers a variety of affordable products across many catagories, including kitchenware, bathroom items, bedding etc. and everything is meant to match - though I can't vouch for how well the things match as we chose Jet Black. Other colours in the range include Funky Fuschia, Purple Fizz, Poppy Red, True Purple, Lagoon, Fiesta Blue, Ocean Blue, Apple Green, Chocolate, Cream and Super White - so something for everyone. Colour Match products are also often on a 3 for 2 offer, which makes them even more affordable. The bath sheets are 100% cotton, a generous size at 140 x 90cm and (for the price) a reasonable weight of 420gsm - which indicates the amount of grams per square metre. Low GSM towels are usually 300-400gsm and quite thin, whereas high GSM tends to be 450-600 for a thicker towel - so these are a good "medium" towel in terms of thickness. Personally I do find them fairly thin compared to my other M&S and Christy towels (which are more than double the price), but they are more than absorbent enough and being thinner allows them to air dry quicker, so not necessarily a bad thing! The towels are not the softest - but then I struggle to get any towels soft unless I tumble dry them. Which reminds me that not many people know that you aren't meant to use fabric softener on towels, as it coats the fibres and makes them less absorbent! It does make for a scratchy towel when air dried though. Before using the towels for the first time, it's recommended to wash them first to prevent getting excess fibres stuck to you - but we'd have done that anyway seeing as we were using them for a baby's birth. So we washed and dried them, and folded them in a pile ready for when the day came. However, in the end we didn't use them as there was far less mess than expected during the birth, and I used one of my regular towels for my post-birth shower! Over the next few days though, we did of course use them, and all I can say is THANK GOODNESS we didn't use them for the birth! They were shedding everywhere! And still, 8 months later, after numerous washes, I get black fibres stuck on me after a bath/shower - perhaps a lighter colour would be less obvious. Despite that though, they don't seem to have thinned or become patchy and actually washed very well. Considering the fact they are black, they haven't faded at all in 8 months and we don't use any fancy detergent for colours. Overall I would highly recommend these towels as a budget buy (especially if you can get a sale price or 3 for 2), especially if you are a large family and need lots of towels, or starting out in your first home, or a student. Dulux Paint Silk
by milliesmum123 My husband and I recently decided to repaint our spare bedroom ready to be turned into a nursery. We had a long discussion about what colours to go for, my husband is quite a perfectionist and once he has done a job he doesn't want to have to repeat it soon after so we had to agree on a colour scheme that could be kept no matter what the ... sex of the baby and that can grow with the baby as it becomes older. We bought Dulux silk paint and although I am pleased with the finished effect it wasn't the best experience of painting we have had. Choosing paint When we have painted before we have known exactly what we have wanted and have gone into a shop, bought the paint and then began the job but on this occasion we stood in B&Q staring at all the options and found it really hard to decide. We had chosen the idea of something neutral but not just very obvious for a nursery like lemon or green so we wanted a more grown up colour like grey or brown which we could use an accent colour against with accessories to make it look more like a nursery. I didn't realise there would be so many options! As well as the cans of paint with different shades of grey and brown there were also colour charts and leaflets with which we could select our very own specific shade to be made up and on top of that options of different variations of paint- silk, matt, fast drying and so forth! It was a bit overwhelming actually, I don't know what paint works best and my husband being a perfectionist needed answers so we got help and the shop assistant was really helpful. He recommended that we use silk paint rather than mat because it is easier to wipe clean without taking paint away so if any finger prints get on it then it's easier to maintain. We eventually chose a shade of brown called malted chocolate. This is a lovely light brown with a hint of grey in it so it's not too dark for the room and is quite a warm colour. We just bought the one can as it was just for 2 walls. We went for Dulux because it was the shade we liked and no other reason. Painting Before painting we obviously prepped the room first by removing all furniture and covering the carpet. We had bought new brushes, rollers and trays and were all prepared and eager to go! The current wall just had white emulsion on so it was a good surface to paint on to. My husband took the lid off using a flat headed screwdriver and then tipped some paint into the roller trays. The tin is really heavy so he had to do this carefully and slowly to make sure not too much paint came out at once. It was a really thick paint, thicker than I had expected but the colour was lovely, although looked slightly lighter once out of the tin. We used rollers to put it on the wall and it went on nicely but we noticed it left quite a few raised bits we weren't sure if this was because of the thickness of the paint, we had put too much paint on the roller or if the roller itself had caused this effect. This meant we had to roll over the paint many times to get it to flatten out and this meant it spread quite far but we were worried that it would dry leaving raised bobbles and we didn't want that, we wanted more of a smooth finish. We used a paint brush around the edges and around the switches to make sure it was neat and this gave a different effect, almost like brush marks and with my husband being a perfectionist he was faffing around for a while to try to make it blend in with the other parts. We stood back and looked at it and it looked awful! Really blotchy in some places with lots of marks in. We decided this was normal and we would wait until the next day to give it a second coat and that should make it all look even. I really hoped he was right as it looked awful. The smell of the paint wasn't too strong and it did seem to dry quite quickly,we felt it after a few hours and it seemed to have dried but we still left it over night just in case. The next day we had to buy more paint as we had just under a third left. We applied another layer of paint and luckily it did seem to cover up the blemishes, it didn't have blotches everywhere which was a huge relief! Cleaning up Trying to get paint out of brushes and rollers is not an easy or fun job! I had no idea it would be so hard! I thought a quick rinse under the tap and it would be clean but no! It took me a good twenty minutes to clean them and considering they weren't the most expensive brushes in the world I did debate just throwing them away but my husband ever the perfectionist said we should clean them. The paint does need to be removed from the brushes and rollers if you intend to reuse them, if you don't remove it properly then dried bits of paint can fall into your fresh paint leaving a very undesirable finish to your wall. It can also make the bristles hard which will not be easy to paint with and will leave big streaks on the wall so cleaning them properly is important. I found using fast running warm water and splaying the bristles of the brush out was most effective and with the roller lots of squeezing and shaking of it! If you know of a faster more efficient way then please do let me know! Ta da! We waited for the paint to dry properly before we stood back and looked at it. We left it a couple of hours and then took a look at our handy work, I was really pleased! I had been really worried that the paint texture would be all wrong, I'd worried it would be really shiny with it being called silk and that the texture we had noticed whilst rolling would really show through but it wasn't either of them. Although it was more shiny than our mat wall before it wasn't hugely noticeable, just a little, subtle bit which was nice. The texture from the rollers couldn't be seen but if you ran your fingers along it and really concentrated then you could feel slightly raised bits but only very, very small ones and it isn't noticable to the eye so I don't mind. The areas around the plug sockets you can tell a brush was used but only if you look very, very closely which I doubt anyone ever will! When you take in the walls as a whole they look really nice, you can't see these tiny imperfections and the finished effect is a really nice one. It's a lovely light brown which has a nice warming feel to it. It's will look lovely once we add some soft furnishings so it brightens it up a bit but even though it is a brown it isn't a dark colour, it's very light and I must say I am quite surprised but very pleased. I do like the finished result. Conclusion This was my first attempt at painting and although I found it quite stressful choosing the right colours and worrying about the textured effect on the wall I did really enjoy it! The paint itself has a lovely finish to it and the shade is nice, it did look lighter out of the tin than in it but it dried very, very similarly to that in the sample so that was good I have heard of people who buy paint and it looks nothing like they expected when they get it on the wall! It was easy enough to apply although because it was so thick it did bobble up a bit and needed a lot of rolling to lie flat and spread out. I haven't got anything to compare it to but I think it has a good finish. It did need two coats despite only going over a white wall but this was fine for us to do seeing as we had the time to do it. It seemed to dry quite fast too. I'm going to knock one star off for the bobbling effect it gave us at first but aside from that I am really happy with it and think we will buy this brand again. It cost us just under £20 for one tin. Read the complete review |
