Air Wick Freshmatic Automatic Spray
Advantages: Automatic pumping of air freshener
I have always spent a lot of money on air fresheners. With having two dogs and three cats I am always conscious of the house stinking. Before the freshmatic I used to have plug-ins but with the price of electricity going up and having a four bedroomed house it was working out quite expensive.
I then discovered the Airwick Freshmatic sprays. They are rather expensive to buy for the unit, around £12.00, although you can find them on offer at a lot of shops normally half price which is a decent saving. You can buy them from most supermarkets, Wilkinsons and some DIY shops.
The air freshener is made by the Rickitt Benckiser Group who make quite a lot of products including Airwick, Cillit Bang, Finish dishwasher products, Nurofen, Bonjela, Lemsip and many other well known products.
The unit is quite large so you can't hide it very well (I tend to put them in corners of rooms). It is made of white plastic, about 21cm high, 9 cm wide and 9 cm deep. The new versions have a light blue petal shapped push button about 6cm in size on the front, that you can push yourself, to give you an extra boost of air freshener when you need it, a tiny green flashing light and a hole the for air freshener to come out. The unit is supplied with 1screw and 1 rawplug so you can hang it on the wall if you want.
The unit has a small round push button on top with which you open the unit. The front of the unit opens up and inside you find two AA batteries (supplied at purchase), the off/timer switch and the can of air freshener, normally Lavender (supplied at purchase).
The Off/Timer switch has 3 timings that controls how ofter the air freshener squirts, either 9, 18 or 36 minutes and off. The Air freshener can sits inside the unit just under a small red button which automatically pushes down onto the top of the can every 9 minutes or whatever time setting you have the unit set at. Do watch out when you first switch the unit on as it automatically squerts after 15 seconds, so if you are placing it up high it can squert in your face, as I have found out numerious times.
These are cans with 250ml of contents and various different smells. You can buy them in most supermarkets or Wilkinsons. They cost around £2.95 and last for about 60 days if using the 36 minute time. Obviously if using one of the other times they will not last as long.
Lavender, which is ideal for bedrooms due to its relaxing smell. (Available all year)
Citrus Fruits which smells of a lovely crisp clean Lemon. I use this in my Bathroom. (Available all year)
Freesia and Jasmine which a delicate floral smell not overpowering. I use this in my Dining Room (Available all year)
Limited Edition Spring Moods (Cherry Blossom and Magnolia) which smells floral. (Available during Spring and Summer)
Limited Edition Winter Collection (Mulled Wine) which has a lovely Christmas warm smell. I love this smell and use it in my lounge when available. (Available Autumn and Winter)
You can also get Dettol Neutra air which fits into the Freshmatic Spray system. I use in my Kitchen as it elimates odours. I can't really describe the smell of this other than clean. I can only buy this in Wilkinsons and not have not seen it in any supermarkets.
Every time I change a refill I always change the batteries as well, (although I am tight and buy 4 batteries at the local cheap shop for 39p, so they probably don't last as long as the better quality batteries). The light on the front of the system flashes slowly when the battery life is good and fast when the battery life is running down. The refill cans are recycleable with your normal tins.
I like the freshmatic system, you can have different smells about your home. I gave a friend some old baby clothes and she said she could tell they were mine because they smelt floral, so the house must smell better. Although after a while as with all air fresheners you do get used to the smell. When the system does release the air freshener you can see the globules fly out of the can and the smell lingers for about 2 minutes. You do also get an annoying Psssst noise when it pumps out. This does make people jump when they are not used to it. After a while when you are in the house all the time you don't notice it.
My husband does moan that sometimes the smell gets in the back of his throat although I can't say I have noticed this. Also make sure you are not in the line of fire as you can get covered in the spray.
