“ Brand: Argos / Type: Laundry basket „
I'm well aware a laundry basket isn't the most exciting item to review, but every house needs one and we have just replaced ours after our old wicker basket fell to pieces. We actually used some vouchers we got as a wedding gift to replace our basket (we couldn't think of anything more exciting to buy with them!), and at full price this basket retails at £19.99 from Argos.
The basket comes in four colours, but this one is the most sensible option with the others being lime green (they say "apple" green, I say lime), purple and blue. The coloured options are a little on the garish side in my opinion, although I guess they may suit a child's bedroom or brightly coloured colour scheme.
Ours is in jet black, which is fairly inoffensive in most rooms. It has a capacity of 48.6 litres (so precise!) and measures 55cm high and 35cm wide on all sides. It has a lid which is attached to the basket, and an inner liner which is white in colour. The liner is removable and washable. The Argos website doesn't state what material the outside of the basket is made from, but it gives a sturdy woven effect.
Our requirements when buying this laundry basket were simply that it would hold our washing during the times we get a bit behind i.e. every week. There are only two of us in our household, and so far this washing has been big enough to hold a week's worth of washing. Ok, it's not ideal going all week without doing any washing but it doesn't happen often, and sometimes we literally just don't get chance. The only time we've struggled to fit everything in is when we've changed the bedsheets or have gathered all the towels hanging around the bathroom, and this basically signals that it's time to get organised and get the washing machine on! I guess it could be a little small for large families, but in reality most laundry baskets don't come much bigger than this, otherwise they'd take over the room. If capacity is an issue, it could be worth investing in two and having one in the bathroom and one in the bedroom.
The other requirement was that the exterior was strong and wouldn't start falling to pieces like our previous wicker basket. Wicker baskets have a nasty tendency to lose their shape, and as they fall apart they can catch on your clothes as we discovered a few times, with jumpers or delicate tops getting caught on the broken wicker. This basket doesn't seem to have that problem as it is very sturdy, and the liner helps protect your clothes.
I haven't actually washed the liner yet, if I'm being honest I didn't realise it could be detached (hadn't really considered it!) until I came to do this review and read the product details. It's good to know it can be washed though, as sometimes if wet washing such as towels are in the basket, they can cause it to smell a bit damp.
The basket has little gaps either side which are used as handles, although we haven't needed to move ours apart from when hoovering, which in all honesty happens less frequently than doing the washing!
All in all, this basket is a stylish and sturdy laundry storage option, which I am confident will be long lasting.
