Brabantia Roll Top Bread Bin
Advantages: Nice compact design, durable
Disadvantages: I don't think it is spacious enough for a family
I didn't like the bread bin I had as thought the bread got too hot inside it and couldn't breathe. And so I had been idly looking for a suitable one for a few weeks until I saw the Brabantia Roll Top Bread Bin when I was shopping in 'The Range' at Romford, Essex.
As I have many products in my home from the manufacturer Brabantia and have now reviewed several of them, I realised that I know little about this company whose name can be seen around my home. My curiosity aroused, I had a look around for some facts and found that they are a Dutch company which originated in 1919 as a small family business. Brabantia endeavour to produce good, strong, 'solid' products that stand the test of time. I would say, going by my purchases from this company so far, that they are succeeding in this respect. Here is just a little of what Brabantia have to say about their company:
"Today, the skills and expertise that built the company are supplemented by specialists. Specialists in the latest materials and in computer aided design and manufacturing. Specialists who secure our position as one of Europe's leading suppliers of innovative household products.
To us, the domestic items of tomorrow are what we are producing today.
Our products are developed to retain their beauty and performance for up to 20 years.
It is the promise of our products, it is the guarantee of our name: Brabantia, solid company
Brabantia puts all its expertise into developing solid, reliable products that retain their beauty and performance over many, many years. Designed for the present, but made to last.
Since its foundation in 1919, the private Dutch company has grown into what Brabantia is today: a successful business with four production units, employing 1.000 employees
and active in no less than 85 countries."
I purchased the Brabantia roll top bread bin in matt black. I wish really that I had waited because soon after purchasing we decided to have a kitchen re-fit. If I had waited until the new kitchen had been finished, or at least been well under way, then I would have chosen the bread bin in the matt steel finger print proof colour which would have matched my other (new) accessories such as my Brabantia biscuit barrel and my tea, coffee and sugar canisters. At the time of purchase I only knew this container was available in black and shiny steel; and I try not to buy shiny finishes as think they constantly need wiping. But never mind! This bread bin still looks good, in my opinion, as my chosen accessories are all in a chrome type or black colour so this blends in well, although I think would have been better in the matt steel.
The lid closes gently without much banging due to its soft close fitting but it isn't slam free.
It's a good design and is space saving too, although I don't think it's really 'family sized.' The contoured shape means it doesn't take up too much space on my kitchen work top and, if necessary items can be placed on its flat top. Although I don't place them here three canisters can fit on top, which makes it rather handy as this looks good (especially if the canisters match the bread bin) and is ideal for a small kitchen.
As it has a roll top design the lid goes back into itself and so does not take up any space. I also like the fact that the lid can be fully or partly closed so if it is full up on any particular day, then the bin doesn't look too bad if it is left open or even partly open.
The base of the bread bin is has raised circles on it which are supposed to ventilate it. I do feel that this probably does help the bread to stay fresher for longer; it's certainly a better design in this respect than my previous bread bin.
SIZE: ONE LARGE LOAF OR TWO MEDIUM (at a squeeze)
The bread bin looks good and as I've mentioned, it doesn't take up too much space. However, I think I could have done with a slightly larger bread bin for my kitchen as now that my son and his fiancée are both teaching they choose to take packed lunches into their (different) schools rather than sample school dinners and this means that not only does the container have to store bread for all the family but also these twos 'daily bread' which can be anything that they buy: rolls, naan bread, pitta, tortilla wraps and sometimes, bagels. This bin holds more than a loaf, in fact two sliced loaves will fit in according to the manufacturer, but I don't entirely agree with this. Two standard sized sliced loaves will only fit in together at a tight squeeze but then the size of loaf isn't specified, or at least I don't think it is. On some days there is a little too much to fit nicely inside. Luckily though the top of the bin is flat and if a few bits and pieces are placed on top it doesn't look too bad.
* Height 17.5 cm
* Width 44.5 cm
* Depth 27.0 cm
I purchased from 'The Range' home ware store. I can't remember exactly how much I paid for this but remember thinking, at the time, that it wasn't too bad a price so think it was around £20.00. The bread bin in matt black doesn't seem to be on their website so I cannot check the price that I paid.
The roll top bread bins seem to be priced differently according to their finish. Here are some stockists with prices for this bread bin in matt black:
TO MATCH YOUR KITCHEN

A FEW CRUMBS STILL TO TELL
As with my other kitchen accessories from Brabantia (biscuit barrel and tea, coffee, sugar canisters) the roll top bread bin is durable as it is manufactured from a corrosion resistant material and a strong plastic. I think it will most likely outlast the kitchen units.
It comes with Brabantia's ten year guarantee
Summary: Nice product from a good manufacturer
