Glade Aerosol Magnolia and Vanilla
Advantages: Masks unpleasant odours effectively, is not expensive
Disadvantages: Pressurized canister so not particularly environmentally friendly
I think cans of air freshener are a necessity in the house. I've tried various kinds of room freshener but always seem to come back to the aerosol cans or the more environmentally-friendly room sprays. I've tried the blocks, gels, candles and things that are powered by batteries that seem to possess an uncanny knack of squirting at you as soon as you walk past them, but always seem to fall back on the aerosol cans. They mask smells instantly, especially the results of cooking and odours of rather an unfortunate nature from toilets and bathrooms. We have a different fragrance for each location in the house and the only reason I am reviewing this one at the moment is because it's close at hand.
Glade has been around for years in one form or another and is manufactured by the S C Johnson company (who also makes Toilet Duck, Mr Muscle, Pledge & Raid among other products). The air fresheners come in a variety of fragrances, including Magnolia and Vanilla which I've just used.
It comes in a highly compressed can about 24cm tall and contains 300ml. The can itself is yellow, white and dark blue and has a picture of a magnolia blossom on the front. On the reverse of the canister you'll find simple instructions in a variety of languages. Basically you shake the can well, point towards the centre of the room and spray. It doesn't recommend using this on fabrics, though.
Because it's a pressurized canister and extremely flammable, there are the usual warnings about keeping it away from sources of ignition, sunlight, naked flames or any incandescent material. You should also not smoke while using it. It does advise to only use in well-ventilated areas which, to me, partly defeats the object of an air freshener.
To use the freshener, it's a simple matter of pointing the canister away from you towards the centre of the room and pressing the yellow button on the top - the longer you leave the button depressed the more spray is released.
Is it effective? The answer has to be 'yes' because it's such a strong aroma that it masks anything unpleasant. The 'smell', for want of a better word, does also last a long time. The fragrance is supposed to be magnolia and vanilla, however in my opinion it's vanilla with a slight touch of something else which may or may not be magnolia. Certainly the most noticeable fragrance is that of vanilla (I must remember to smell our magnolia tree when it blooms next to see if I can recognize the scent). It's certainly not an unpleasant fragrance - it doesn't smell particularly unnatural like some cheaper air fresheners - although I do know people who don't really care for the smell of vanilla.
The can lasts a long time (dependent, or course, on the number of times you have to use it). The price is usually around £1.23 (Sainsburys currently have an offer of buy 2 for £2) which I think is quite reasonable.
Does it get my recommendation? Well it does the job it's supposed to do, has a pleasant-enough smell and is not costly, so yes it does.
Summary: An effective air freshener with a pleasant fragrance
