Advantages: Fairly fine powder which is easily vacuumed from carpet leaving a nice fresh smell
Disadvantages: None really unless your vacuum breaks!
Last weekend I hosted a small family party to celebrate my dad being eighty years old. Although of course I have to do housework on a regular basis, I have never learnt to be that good at it but, on occasions when I will have visitors to my home, especially some older family members, I tend to catch up on all those jobs that some probably do weekly such as cleaning paintwork. Well, as the party was a at home and I felt as if my home would be on show, I worked like Trojan, but with lots of help from my husband, to make the house look presentable.
Once most of the required jobs were undertaken and completed and the party was only a day away I had a good look around to see what might have been missed. Was there still anything that needed doing? After a good look it seemed to me as if everything looked as good as I could get it without going to the extremes of decorating the whole house, but it was now more of a question, in my opinion, of everything looking clean and fresh but maybe not matching up to this in the fragrance stakes! I don't consider my family to be particularly smelly, well that is apart from the dog, Joey.
Joey has some hang-ups which include being scared when a thunderstorm is happening, or even if it is imminent. At times like these accidents happen and marking occurs. Of course, these are cleaned up but I do think that these accidents can sometimes, over time, build up and leave a lingering smell, however well I feel I have cleaned things up. This can be none too attractive to us who live here and could possibly be more noticeable to guests.
Every so often the electric carpet shampooer is brought out and put to use and this is the most effective way to cure the home of bad smells, and stains as well, but we went to the bother of shampooing the carpets only a few weeks ago and so for this particular party we didn't want to have to go too mad (having only just had another party to organise) but never the less we did want to spruce the place up and not have any embarrassing lingering doggy odours to greet our guests with.
My husband suggested that we should buy some powder carpet freshener/deodoriser which we could use in both the downstairs hallway and our living room, which is of a through lounge design.
When we were out shopping we first saw some of these products, one being a freshen up powder by Neutradol. We have used this a few times in the past but my husband hates the smell of Neutradol and went so far as to say he would rather keep the doggy smells than use this one. I actually thought the Neutradol worked well but do have to admit that the smell was a bit cloying and, as I have two people in the house who have suffered/suffer with asthma I thought if possible I would steer clear of this product.
We ended up in a shop which had three similar products on sale and although not a pound store all were being sold for the reasonable price of just one pound. I bought one which had a higher content weight, along with two of the Glade Shake n Vac in the lily of the valley odour. There were two other fragrances available by Glade. They also sold the Neutradol product which I had decided against buying. The Glade Shake n Vac contains 500g in weight compared to the Bloome product which has 900g.
I bought the lily of the Valley fragranced Shake n Vac as this is a smell which I love and I also thought Glade was perhaps a better product than the other brand, but thought I'd give that one a try also as it was in a larger size and would be a okay to use if I ran out, or to keep for another time.
I first tried the cheaper (taking into account the bigger size) Bloome Floral bouquet deodorising powder, sprinkling it fairly liberally ain the carpeted hallway and found the smell to be quite strong and pleasant enough, but I had to take great care with the shaking as every now and again it came out in clumps. After scattering this powder along approximately half of the carpet in the hallway I decided to switch to the Glade Shake n Vac.
It was a good idea to change product because, as I had thought, the Glade product was, in my opinion, superior to the other purchase, but I am glad that I had something to compare it with. The Shake n Vac was much nicer to shake out on the carpet as it dispersed much more finely than the previously used can. There were only a very few small clumps with the Glade and overall it was a fine powder which didn't make my dark reddish carpet look as white as the other one had, although it covered well.
After shaking from side to side the powder should be left for a few minutes before vacuuming. This is when I had a problem; my vacuum decided to stop working. On inspection it proved to be a broken belt. Luckily I have another older vacuum which was employed to step in but the job was delayed, leaving the powder covering the carpet for a longer time. I did find that the Glade Shake n vac was easier to vacuum up than the other type. The Glade pretty much became sucked up into my bag less cleaner with not too much effort whereas the other needed the vacuum to be run over it, and in different directions, several times.
Next was the living room's turn. My son and his girlfriend had arrived home in readiness for the next day's party so they had now to be shooed out of the way so that I could shake away over the lounge. Again I was impressed with the texture of the powder. I also thought a little of this went a long way and so I only needed to use one whole bottle, a very small amount from the second bottle and also a tiny amount from the other product which I had started with. I treated the downstairs hall carpet plus the through lounge, which is in excess of 25 foot in length, and two footstalls.
As I shook the powder out from the living room area and into the dining room area, I was impressed with the smell. As said I do love the smell of lily of the valley as I find it a pleasant smell without it being overpowering.
I let the powder to remain on the carpet for about five minutes or so before starting to vacuum. The carpet in this room is a plain dark grey (graphite) with a very deep pile. I was worried that the vacuum I was now using wouldn't be powerful enough to suck up the white powder from the pile but I needn't have worried as it coped well with this powder. The vacuuming process only needed to be performed in the usual way without any extra effort being needed.
Once the treated areas had been vacuumed I thought they looked especially clean and certainly smelled lovely; much fresher than before. I was very pleased with the finished effect.
The party went well. I believe the house looked clean and smelled pleasant, although when our guests arrived the house was probably more fragranced by food than Lily of the Valley, but at least I knew any possible odours had been treated and I was glad that I had made the effort.
*Shake n Vac is only to be used on dry carpets.
