==Glade Shake n' Vac==
Do any of you remember the advert, which first aired in 1980 & featured an over-excited Jenny Logan dancing around her filming studio with a Hoover Junior Upright & a vintage bottle of Shake n Vac? Well, I don't, because I wasnt born then! However, many people do, & you can find the advert on Youtube (if you're sad enough to do so!) Shake n Vac is still widely available in 3 different fragrances, so it might be worth a try if you're carpets & rooms smell (or stink) due to some specific reason. Now, join me as we live the ups & downs of Shake n Vac...
==Company & Product History==
Shake n Vac is produced by Air Freshener company Glade, who were created by SC Johnson (Wax). SC Johnson was founded in 1886 & make products such as Pledge, Mr Muscle, Duck & Oust. Glade Shake n Vac was launched in 1979 & seemed an easy way to overcome cooking & pet odours as you sprinkle it over your carpet, wait for a few moments & vacuum up. As the iconic advert ran from 1980 to 1989, the look of the bottles & the fragrances changed over 9 years. The fragrances went from 1 fragrance to 4 fragrances which helped to suit what home you lived in. During the 1990's the fragrance choices went to 3 & that is what it is today. The size has changed from 350g since the beginning, to 400g from 1994 to 2010 & being 500g for the 30th annivrsary in 2010.
In many ways Glade Shake n Vac can be noticed. It sits in a tall & skinny green plastic tub with the Glade name plastered it, with the fragrance shown below it. The particular fragrance I currently have is Citrus Blossom, even though you're able to buy Shake n Vac in fragrances Lily of the Valley & Magnolia & Vanilla. The Citrus Blossom variety is Orange & has the picture of a very juicy half orange on it. A banner which states that this product contains an Odour Neutraliser that helps to eliminate odours within the carpet. A flip top lid which has 2 holes that are average size is to release the powder. Lets see how it did then...
The instructions on the Glade Shake n Vac packet say that to get best results you should hold the bottle slightly inclined (ie have the top end a little bit above the bottom end) & shake from side to side over a carpeted area, leave for a few minutes then THOROUGHLY vacuum. I tried this on our hallway carpet which is a medium pile to say the least, so I popped open the lid & held the botle at the angle stated on the bottle. I shaked the packet from side to side to see the powder coming out was very light & fluffy. This effect made the powder float to the carpet instead of some other carpet powders that you just sprinkle & they just fall straight down to the carpet. I prefer the latter because it then means the powder wont go everywhere else where you don't want it to. The powder that comes out smells lovely & releases it scent when it floated to the floor. Upon vacuuming, for which I use a Cylinder Vacuum, mainly Henry or the Vax 6131, but it's dependent on what I want to use. Whichever vacuum I use, the powder picks up brilliantly & you're able to see where you have picked up the powder & where you havent. An upright would do better on pick up power because of the rotating brush bar featured on the underside of the vacuum, but if you have a turbo nozzle for your cylinder vacuum cleaner (Electric or Air-Driven) this will do a better job. As both of my vacuum cleaners are bagged models, whenever I next turn on the machine if I havent changed the bag, I get a repetive smell of Citrus which proves how long lasting the fragrance is. If you have a bagless or Cyclonic vacuum, then the smell will get taken away from you, so you wont get a repetive scent treat. Also, if you are using this product regularly (eg 2 bottles a month) then please wash your carpets to flush out any Shake n Vac that you're Vacuum Cleaner hasn't picked up. It could have built up & been squahed to the bottom of the pile, & the only way of removing it is to wash it out. Just a word of warning.
Lets get one thing straight, If you're going to use this EVERYTIME you vacuum, it's going to be expensive, so I use it once on average every two weeks & wash my carpet twice a year. That keeps them smelling fresh & looking good. However, Shake n Vac does work & leaves a lovely scent on the carpet for hours after you've vacuumed. But, if you wash your carpets regularly & use this sparingly, I don't see why you can't use this product! Shake n Vac retails for around £1.40 in the Supermarkets but can be found for as low as 99p in Bargain stores. © BrookieFan99 2012
