H&M Linen Blanket ----------------------- Regular readers of my reviews will know that I have recently been decorating my bedroom, and part of the reason why I have been really enjoying seeing the transformation is due to my discovery that H&M actually have a homewears department. H&M isn't a shop that I visit very often for clothing, as I purchase nearly all my wardrobe from Fat Face or White Stuff, but I do sometimes purchase their jumpers as they are cheap and cheerful and last well. However in terms of home décor, and in particular soft furnishings, I am migrating away from the expensive and "keep it for years" attitude, to the less costly and more frequent replacement options and H&M fits this perfectly. We don't have a homewears department where I live in Chelmsford, although I believe there is one at Stratford in the new Westfields development, so I purchased online which was a very easy and positive experience. What I have discovered recently is that on the website at H&M the homewears are presented with certain styles in mind, from the minimalistic to the romantic, and so purchasing items to make a room complete is easy, as there are several items within each collection that compliment each other. My bedroom theme is French, and they are especially strong in this area, and over the last couple of years there have been several collections with this theme in mind. What I really value about the items is that they use cotton and linen as the fabrics of choice, so bed linen and curtains are all made from these natural fabrics, despite having the price tags you would expect from less expensive to produce man made fibres. In addition to this the voucher codes you can find online really take serious amounts off the totals, and if you find more than one you can layer them making a substantial discount. My Linen Blanket. --------------------- The website itself is careful to show the items in room situations, as well as just as thumbnail images for the most popular items, and the linen blanket that I purchased some time ago was chosen from a room display that I saw online at the time of purchase. When I purchased the blankets there were two colour options- green or grey, and I bought both, but now I believe there is only the green remaining, but this has turned out to be my favourite of the two. The blanket is really what you would describe as a throw, and on the website it is shown in a dining setting slung over a wooden chair, but it looks beautiful on my bed and adds to the French scheme that I have created. Made from washed linen, and backed with a plain cotton, the blanket is beautifully made, and is actually quite heavy so it does impart warmth as well as having a decorative value. In fact during this heat wave I have folded it up and put it to one side. It is a generous size measuring 130 by 170cm and it can be machine washed at 30 degrees making it a very easy to care for item. To give you an idea when unfolded it covers the lower half of the bed. It retails for £34.99 which is probably one of their most expensive items, as many of their homewears are incredibly inexpensive, with pure cotton double duvet sets retailing for less than £20 and single sets for just over £11. What I really love about this though is the design - it has a deep bottle green stripe on a traditional flax coloured linen and has the words "Provence and Roussillon" written across which gives it a French country feel to it. It co-ordinates beautifully with an enamel green lampshade that I have above the bed, and also with the white linen sheets I have and the black bedstead headboard. I have curtains that have the Provence/Roussillon text written on them which were also purchased from the website at a modest cost which completes the look. I have been so impressed by H&M in terms of everything from the speed of delivery which was superb, the price, and most importantly the quality. It is so lovely to be able to create a room so inexpensively and to know that if in a few years it becomes less attractive, or you just get tired of it, that it can be recreated for so much less. This is a superb blanket that is a unique item, and if you want to use it for al fresco dining or simply for a French themed living room or dining area it would look just as good. Highly recommended.
