Lakeland Chrome Banana Tree
Disadvantages: none for me!
I am a real sucker when it comes to kitchen gadgets -some having proved more useful than others! One of my more useful purchases was a chrome banana tree I picked up from Lakeland in Edinburgh. Lakeland is one of my most favourite shops and I could happily spent several hours browsing its vast choice of gadgets I didn't know existed, let alone that I might just need to buy ! Lakeland has its main branch near to the train station in Windermere, Cumbria. There are also branches dotted around the country as well as an excellent web site.
Back to the banana tree! It's a simple, if stylish looking object made of shiny chrome. The base is a spiral shape with a long arm with a hook at the top for holding your bunch of bananas. I paid £6.99 for my banana tree and I think it was money well spent! The tree looks and feels like a good quality item. The spiral base ensures the tree stands securely and is not easily knocked over.
We eat a lot of fruit in our family including bananas. It is not advisable to keep bananas with other fruit as they give off a gas known as ethylene. The gas encourages other fruit to ripen more quickly and so it can spoil before you are able to eat it. Bananas also bruise easily and hanging them from a tree will help protect their delicate flesh. I tend to buy bananas when they are still slightly green and allow them to ripen at home. It is true that bananas will keep well in a brown paper bag, but I really prefer the look of my chrome tree!
As well as simply peeling and eating bananas, I use them to make milkshakes and smoothies. I also use them to naturally sweeten porridge .If they do go black they can be used to make a lovely moist banana cake.
Overall I think this simple little gadget is well worth the cost. It certainly ensures my bananas do not ripen too quickly and prevents them from getting bruised in the fruit bowl. They look attractive hanging on my kitchen worktop and this seems to encourage my children to east them!
