“ MagnaClean is a powerful, compact magnetic filter with a unique swirl chamber designed to remove virtually 100% of suspended Iron Oxide and other particulate from the water circulating through the heating system. Unlike typical Y-strainer filters which clog up and experience a dramatic reduction in flow performance, MagnaClean maintains full flow rates at all times, and is so powerful it will retain at least 50X the amount of debris on its easily removed sheath. The incredibly tough 'Glass fibre reinforced Nylon' shell is almost unbreakable. For the maintenance of efficiency levels in central heating systems. „
This device is just sheer excellence; no doubt the inventor must be just sunning it up in the tropics somewhere by now. I am a plumber whos worked in the industry for years. All these years from the time I was an apprentice till today we knew that black sludgy water (mainly black iron oxide) was bad for your central heating, causing issues such as radiators corroding through and developing leaks, blocked components in you system and boiler, cold spots on the bottom of your radiator, and finally an increasing lack off efficiency and thus increased running costs. Who would dream a large magnet in a plastic bottle, linked to your system would provide a solution. I as most people today would be were a little sceptical when presented with the leaflet and demonstration kit at a conference last year, and it wasnt until I saw one in action on a job earlier this that I decided to purchase and install one.
The unit cost me £99 from the plumb centre and came with a 3 year warranty. Being such a simple unit I cant see this really being used much. There are two types available, a 22mm version the one I bought, and a 28mm version slightly more expensive. Installation was simple, drain down your central heating circuit, cut out a length of pipe as detailed in the installation instructions and fit the valves. Screw in the unit and tighten up. Finally refill system with water and adequate chemicals and de-aerate.
With my system, it has been cleaned with a flushing machine and had fresh chemicals twice since I moved in 6 years ago so the water quality was very good, but as per the instructions after fitting I ran the system and after a while removed the filter. Too my amazement it came out 5mm thick with magnetite (the industry term for sludge.) I washed and cleaned the filter once more and replaced.
After 3 months I removed the filter and again to my amazement found it packed with this magnetite. At this point I decided that I would offer some of my customers these. Currently I supply and fit for around £200 with chemicals, however for those who have a bit of DIY expertise, a couple of spare hours should suffice.
The unit is simple in design and as described earlier is a magnet in a plastic bottle linked to your system. Its about 200mm length in total and weighs very little. It comes with all the correct tools to service/clean the unit on a yearly basis although tools to install the unit will need to be purchased. Magnaclean advise that this unit will not block like other filters on the market due to a unique patented design. Please note there are specific areas of the heating system the filter cannot be installed, read the installation instructions for these. Finally the instructions do not specify that the unit can be installed horizontally or vertically as it has its own air release.
