Recently, we sorted out our daughters' bedrooms and they each now have their own bedroom rather than sharing. This meant that I had to buy a few things and one of these was a laundry basket for my older daughter's bedroom. After shopping around a bit I finally settled on the Princess Pink Pop Up Laundry Hamper. This was selling on Amazon Marketplace for £7.99 plus an additional £3.25 for shipping. However, I got a new one for a bit less than this price through an ebay seller.
The pop up hamper can be used for either dirty washing or for toys. It is very pink which suits my daughter down to the ground and fits in nicely with her new colour scheme. In addition to this though, it also has a pink fake fur edging and the lid proudly proclaims that it is for a princess. It also has some patterned edging at both the top and the bottom and there is a crown on the lid. The whole thing is really attractive for young girls and my daughter thought that it was really cool when I showed her. The lid can be zipped tight which is both a good and a bad thing. If the hamper is zipped up, I can ask my daughter to bring it downstairs with no fears about spilling dirty clothing all the way, However, if it is zipped, it makes it quite fiddly for putting the clothes in and I have recently been noticing clothes piling up on top of the lid as my seven year old princess cannot be bothered to unzip it! (We shall have to have words!)
When we got the hamper it came flat-packed. It has a couple of handy toggles that will keep it firmly in place which means that it is very convenient to store if you are not using it. As soon as we untoggled it though it immediately sprang into its correct shape - much to my daughters' surprise and excitement! When it is up it feels pretty sturdy even though the sides are made of a sort of gauze netting. It is 55 cm high and 45 cm wide which means that its capacity is really good. It would take a lot of dirty clothes, but hopefully it will never quite get filled to the top as that would mean that I would be terribly behind with the washing!
We've had the hamper for a couple of months now and although it looks flimsy it actually seems pretty sturdy and robust. We are only using it for dirty washing so I can't say how it would fare with toys going in and out. I do need to remind the girls that it is not a toy though. We used to have something similar from Next when they were smaller and they insisted on climbing in it. Suffice to say that one did not fare so well but at least they are older and more sensible now!
Overall this is a very attractive and practical item that would look great in any girl's bedroom. It does the job in hand and did not cost the earth either. Just one thing though - having it in the bedroom does not necessarily guarantee that your daughter will actually put the dirty washing in it! One can always hope though!
