I needed an A1 portfolio for my interview at Cambridge (architecture) so I decided to buy one online, given it was the cheapest option. Having went to stores and asked, the cheapest quote I got was £50, and they had rings in them, which wasn't what I needed, as most of my work was relief and the inclusion of rings would've damaged them.
So I looked online on Amazon and found this Royal and Langnickel artist portfolio. The details weren't clear on the page, so I had to message the sellers and to be delight it was exactly what I wanted- an A1 sized portfolio without rings. The cost of the portfolio plus Postage and packaging came to about £20, which was far cheaper than I otherwise thought it would be.
It took about three days to arrive and was packaged securely. The portfolio is made of vinyl, so it is a bit floppy (this is perhaps the only downside to the portfolio). The handles are sturdy and I can't see them being able to break off anytime soon. I would've also liked another handle to the side of it so I could carry it under my arms, but that is an additional small thing.
I managed to put about 10 A1 sheets mounted with work plus two sketchbooks with space to spare which is really good, but it was already quite heavy with what I've got.
I successfully brought my work to the interview- moving around in tight spaces with this is a bit of a problem though, and I don't think getting on packed public transport is a good idea either- so it does pose social problems. Though it does a good job keeping my work safe and undamaged.
Overall, the portfolio has done what it is required to do- keep work safe and be durable. I can see this lasting several years and the price is phenomenal. Of course it isn't the best quality one out there- you can get ones made of canvas, padded and so on, but this is good enough for me.
