“ Decorative Sculpture „
On a visit to Sweden it became apparent that a gift had to be purchased for Little Miss, and because she likes sparkly things, and has a collection of "precious things" this seemed an obvious choice.
We were told that the engraver, Mats Jonasson started work at the glass works in 1959 and has since developed the range of animals motifs that has become famous and has spread all round the world.
The Safari Reindeer is a sculpture in lead crystal and is designed and signed by Mats Jonasson. It comes in a box with some information about the artist and details of some of the other available sculptures by the same engraver. When the sculpture is taken out of the box, there is a small rectangular, black wooden stand ready for the sculpture to stand on. The sculpture itself really does look as though it is in crystal and is curved around the edges. Measuring about 8 inches high and the same wide, it sits nicely on its little stand. The reindeer looks as though it is actually inside the crystal block, and is in shades of grey and white with antlers which are almost golden colour. The engraving itself had me quite fascinated because his fur really does look like fur, and he looks poised to walk through the snow.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY...
The sculpture cost around £33 when we took the exchange rate into account. This was obviously bought in Sweden but the sculptures are available online by doing a general search for matsjonasson.
Seems to be quite a prolific producer of sculptures including a wide range of animals and flowers.
WHAT WE THOUGHT...
This was as I said, a gift for Little Miss, rather than buying the usual touristy thing. It was an instant hit because she loves any kind of wildlife and it is a bit sparkly. The sculpture also fit into her idea of what would be in Sweden, with the reindeer.
The sculpture stands nicely on the stand but be careful when dusting as it can be knocked off although it is sturdy and if it falls onto the carpet, it suffers no damage...I wouldn't try the tiled floors though.
If it is placed on a windowsill, the light shines through the crystal and you can really see the detail on the reindeer, so it looks very pretty. Little Miss liked some of the detail and it was she who noticed that because it's engraved the shape of the reindeer is indented on the back.
A nice gift for someone liking this kind of thing, and surprisingly non tacky for the sparkly collection!
