Stabilo Boss Highlighter
Advantages: Vibrant colour
Disadvantages: Can make ink run
My office stationary is supplied like most places by the office. I have no choice or say in what is bought although of course we can request certain items should we need them. There are however a few items that over the years the staff have agreed that having a named brand is far better not only for quality but also economic sense in the long run. One of these items is a highlighter. You can get many varieties and brands but we all have come to the conclusion that the cheap highlighters are absolutely useless they dry up quickly, make ink run and just cannot withstand heavy duty use.
Therefore, the brand my office now only buys is Stabilo. The highlighter is question is Stabilo Boss Original which has successfully been on the market since 1972 and according to Stabilo it has been the unchallenged market leader since that date. I have been using the Stabilo Boss Original since I can remember and for me it has always come out on top. Stabilo make a whole range of varying highlighter pens for everyones needs and have their own dedicated website to the products they make.
What is it?
The Stabilo Boss Original has changed slightly in design since 1972 but Stabilo have kept its classic design and simply adapted to keep up to date especially with plenty of other rival brands on the market. It is however still a chunky shaped highlighter which is incredibly easy to hold. The Boss Original highlighter come in 9 fluorescent colours ranging from blues to pinks to yellow. Mine currently is the neon yellow and green.
They are available in two line widths depending on the way you highlight your work - either a thin line (2mm) similar to that of a felt tip pen or a thicker line (5mm) for when you are highlighting text. The ink is water based but is suitable for any type of paper whether you have written in ink or have printed text. Stabilo also claim that it can stay perfectly usable for up to 4 hours without the lid on which is quite impressive but for me not essential.
The Stabilo Boss Original isn't the most attractive of highlighters as it is rectangular in shape with flat sides but this design is based on the fact that it won't roll off your desk so it stays in place easily making it an incredibly useful pen when working. The main part of the pen is the colour of the ink so my current highlighter is neon yellow so it is a bright yellow pen with a black snap on top. On the one side of the pen there is the product name and swan image and on the back there is the barcode, product name again as well as key points about the product.
I use the highlighter pen to generally mark up documents that I have either printed out or need to amend in manuscript and I find that they highlight easily and quickly. The highlighter dries instantly on the paper and doesn't make it wet or crinkle up. I find that when highlighting work documents the only colours really that suitable is yellow and possibly the orange as some of the others are just too dark and they don't show up the text well underneath even it is black ink.
I generally use the other colours if I have to mark up a plan and need to use multiple colours but they are just too dark to highlight text for my needs but they all seem to give the same vibrant, vivid colour that works well against paper for me. My neon yellow highlighter has been going well for over 6 months now and shows no sign of drying up and it gets used on a daily basis as well as definitely good value for money.
The only thing I have found though is sometimes it can make the ink run when used almost immediately on freshly printed documents which can be a pain as not only is the nib tainted with black ink but it then means the next time I use it the yellow will then come out a bit dirty until it has worn off. But this doesn't happen every time I use the highlighter but still frustrating as it just messes up the document.
Definitely a highlighter which serves my works needs and is one of the better quality highlighters on the market making it ideal for office use as well as home use. The fact that my yellow highlighter is still going strong with over 6 months of constant use I really cannot complain as it is showing no signs of drying up. However, due to the fact that only a few of the neon colours are actually suitable for highlighting documents I can only award this product 4 stars that and the fact it can make ink run has just knocked a star off. But a definite recommendation to those that use a highlighter regularly.
