Stabilo Boss Highlighter
Advantages: Bright colours, don't bleed through, smooth highlighting
Disadvantages: Pen lid confusion!
These have been a constant companion to my studying over the years! And I know many students would feel the same, and no doubt some professionals/those in a job...
They come in different pack sizes - I have the one with just 4 basic colours in - blue, pink, orange and yellow. They come in a plastic box with minimal writing on the outside - mainly just the logo and product title on the outside with a short product description on the back. On the inside, there is a plastic inlay to keep all the highlighters facing the right way.
I have always had stabilo highlighters, since my mum bought one home from work for her to use and I was fascinated with it and started highlighting random things (weird child I know...) But I bought my set in Year 9 of school (so about 8 years ago now) and they still work perfectly, which just shows that they definitely stand the test of time and do not dry out easily. The colours are very bright which is very useful when you need to draw attention to certain parts of the text you are summarising. I have also found that they do not bleed through the paper - even thin bad quality university library paper - which is very useful as it doesn't stain what you're leaning on or confuse things if you have printed back to back! Also I have found them to highlight very smoothly, you don't have to drag them across the page, they highlight effectively with a very light touch which I've found useful in the past.
However I have found if you go over it twice (usually due to my clumsy highlighting and only highlighting half the word) it peels the paper away. Though this is likely to happen with any highlighter and it's more my own fault than anything else, it is something to watch when you are highlighting as it makes documents look scruffy or hard to read.
Also, I tend to take the lids off and put them on the desk while I highlight as the ends of the pen aren't quite small enough to cap the lids on. This is all well and good until I use more than one highlighter at a time, because if you put the wrong lid back on it stains the lighter pen very easily and then your highlighting will be a weird colour for a while. Yet again a bit of a circumstantial flaw bit still something to watch and perhaps a flaw in not having the same lid colour to the pen.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this product as they have a wide range of colours avalailable, they highlight brightly and don't dry out quickly so even if they look expensive you definitely get your worth out of them!
Summary: Would definitely recommend as a staple stationary item for anyone needing to summarise documents!
