Advantages: Cheap and scoops ice cream.
Disadvantages: Not the best design.
I purchased this Tesco Value ice cream scoop during my student phase. It's cheap and for a basic price it does the basic job that it's constructed to do. I don't think I even paid as much as a pound for this so given that low price anyone on a tight budget will be happy enough with this product and it seems to last forever.
However, as the months have rolled on into years, it doesn't quite match up the dinner parties that I cater for now. The black plastic handle makes it look cheap. Perhaps none of my guests care but when I've taken so much trouble with every other fine detail I think this scoop lets me down on the glamour front. I don't know why I always forget to replace the ice cream scoop. My guests are, hopefully, just looking at the delicious ice cream rather than the utensil that serves them. However, I don't want you not to buy this scoop. It's so cheap that it's perfect for students and families but is not good for classy dinners.
The scoop does not shape the ice cream into perfect servings. It can be a tough job to dig and scoop hard ice cream. I find it helps to dip the scoop into a cup of hot water first. Perhaps there are scoops out there that do not require the ice cream to soften. It would be nice not to have to wait on serving the ice cream. I'd rather eat the ice cream than have to look and wait whilst my guests and I are licking our lips in anticipation.
The scoop is solid, but not ideal enough for me, in shape. The design of the spoon could be bettered by giving the scoop more of a tighter shape. With a better design I would be able to make a good presentation in my guests bowls. The handle is made of cheap black plastic. It sits in the hand comfortably because there's a dip in it for the thumb to rest on. The handle even has a hole in for hanging from a hook rather than having to take up room in a drawer.
Warning - ice cream scoops can be a hazard to your health!
I bet you would never expect an ice cream scoop to come with a warning but they all should. Do not lick ice cream off from the scoop. Many years ago, someone who shall remain nameless, got her tongue stuck to the scoop! It was hilarious but not so good for the unsuspecting victim of the ice cream scoop.
Students and families buy this bargain but hosts and hostesses might want something more upmarket if serving the ice cream in front of guests. Now remember no licking of any ice cream scoop!
Summary: Good value for people on a budget.
