Advantages: Cheap, good for party food
Disadvantages: Not suitable for anything heavy/wet
I recently bought a packet of these Tesco Value paper plates for a work lunch party. The packet of 50 paper plates cost just £1 and they were definitely the cheapest disposable plates I could find on the shelves. The packaging on these plates is simple - a thin plastic covering with a sticker on the front which holds the product information.
The plates themselves are made of white cardboard and are ridge round the edges which turn up slightly - helpful for keeping the food on your plate. They are 22cm in size which is the perfect size for a party food buffet. The plates themselves are quite thin, thinner than other paper plates I have used in the past, and I found that they were quite difficult to separate and it was easy to pick up 2 at once thinking you just had one.
I found that the plates held a reasonable amount of food but if you put anything heavy on them they became difficult to hold and felt like they weren't supporting the weight of the food. For example, at this party we had cheesecake for dessert, and the plates were difficult to pass around with this on it. I also found that if left sitting for a while with any kind of wet food on them, the plates absorbed the moisture. We had plated up some food for a colleague who was going to be late to the party, and the salad made her plate slightly wet and soggy by the time she arrived.
At the price of 2p per plate, I was reasonably pleased with these plates. I think they are perfect for a party food buffet as long as you avoid putting anything too wet or heavy on them. I don't think they would be great for a proper dinner or a substantial meal that required a knife and fork, and if I wanted paper plates for something like this I would probably buy a more expensive brand.
I think these plates would also be good for children's craft activities because they are so cheap and would be perfect to draw on with felt tips or coloured pencils. They would also be handy for picnics when you don't want to take up much space with plastic plates! I give these plates 4* as despite their shortfalls, I think at the price they are you can't expect much more! Thanks for reading/rating.
