Advantages: Convenient, cheap, can hold lots of light food.
Disadvantages: Don't hold up well to heavy items, bend easily.
As I wrote in a previous review we have little gatherings at work from time to time to celebrate special occasions. Recently we had one such gathering to celebrate the anniversary of one of my colleagues joining the company.
We do actually get a budget from our company to buy supplies for such gatherings which is very generous of them, however we like to try and shave a little off the supplies where we can and get some nice cupcakes from a shop just down the road from my work. These particular plates are 22cm in diameter and you can get 50 for just £1.20 from Tesco. This is a very reasonable price and is ideal for us at work as we have people who can't eat certain foods and so we all need our own plates to eat from.
These are value plates and as such they are very thin. They are paper plates and they have a raised pleated edge. This is good for keeping food on your plate if your plate wobbles, which it does often with these. Because they are cheap they are thinly made and because of this they do bend and wobble in your hand. I tend to just plonk a plate over my hand and then load up mostly the middle to ensure that the palm of my hand helps hold the majority of the weight so that the food doesn't end up all over the floor.
In the past I have also used these plates for a barbeque and they were suitable for a burger and a bit of salad but you wouldn't really want to overload these just because they bend so easily. When it comes to putting potato salad, sauce and other partial liquid based products on this it does hold up quite well. As long as you don't leave too much moisture on the plate these can be re-used again if you choose to as they don't start to go soggy right away and I am always surprised by this.
Of course the best thing about these plates is that they don't need to be washed up and they are convenient in that respect. I like being able to sweep the contents of the table in to the bin when we are all finished and going home for the day. Convenience is definitely key when I am at work as we are often short on time yet wanting to do something to mark a special occasion.
These plates really are suitable for light products and anything that isn't too watery. If you start to put heavier items on the plates such as pork pies, desserts, burgers etc then they do start to buckle and bend which is a downside. Mind you, I wouldn't expect anything more for just 2p per plate. These are convenient, which is all we really need, and the cost is not prohibitive at all. These plates can be folded in half with ease to throw them away and avoid any spillage on the way to the bin and they come stacked in their wrapping which is great too as they are kept dirt free when not in use, well besides the top plate perhaps. I am rating these 3/5 as I feel for the price they are a quality product but I am knocking off two stars because they are flimsy and they do bend very easily when in use which can lead to spillage and wasted food.
