Tesco value Plastic cups
Over the festive period I help out at a village coffee get together get together and on these occasions we use plastic cups for the children as the meeting takes place in our village church and the floor is stone so anything dropped breaks. We also used these for my granddaughter's birthday party in November when she had a bout twenty friends in the local pre-school to her party.
I do find these plastic cups/glasses are a bit limited in their use as they are quite thin and very bendy.
The birthday party was fine as the children were all seated when they were eating and drinking. We served the cordial into their cups and only half filled them at each serving. This meant that they were not too heavy for their small hands and they managed to grip the cups without having to squeeze them too hard. If they were full they became heavy and as the child held it they squeezed the cup and the liquid came out of the top or they just tipped it over because it became unbalanced.
They are quite light so even with drink in them it was very easy to knock them over as the child leant across to get food. We avoided too much leaning by serving the children the food as they needed it.. The table cloth, which was plastic however did get pulled and moved so we did have a couple of spills. Luckily as the cups were only half full there was not a lot to clear up.
One use that these cups have which does not matter that they are so pathetically thin is for craft sessions. As an ex teacher I have any number of craft creations that can be made from paper plates and plastic cups. The cups can be used as phones with two and a piece of string or use several with string to make puppets. They also make angels using the half paper plate as wings and a head of cotton wool wrapped in thin fabric or tissue. They can also be made into Christmas bells with some spray paint and glitter etc. We used a few with the grandchildren pre Christmas to make bells and angels which were quite popular.
The cups are the size of a small glass and are VERY thin so not ideal for adults really as they hold very little. They are useless for mulled wine or anything hot as they have no insulation and would probably melt anyway. They are just about okay for small quantities of cold drink and then only if you are sitting down as the cup is so thin it bends as you are holding in.
So these are fine for a small amounts of drink but absolutely useless for anything hot or if you fill the cup up to capacity. I think unless children are sitting at a table I would avoid using these for drinks with children as they will not be able to hold the cup without squeezing them and so squashing the liquid out of the top and drink will be spilled.
They are great for craft activities.
They are cheap
They save washing up
Fine for small quantities of cold drinks
They cannot cause injury through broken glass
They are useless for hot drinks
They are too thin for filling with any liquid really
They bend far too easily
Not very eco friendly as plastic is not biodegradable
Yes they are brilliant for craft activities and great value for that use. No if you are planning on using them for drinks as they are not strong enough to hold liquid without bending. If I were going to have a children's party I would buy IKEA's plastic cups which are re usable, stronger and far better for the environment and also do not break or cost that much.
