Volex Socket Double Switched
Advantages: Look great, work well, easy to clean
Disadvantages: None for us
As my regular readers will know we had a new kitchen installed a couple of years ago. We went the whole way and had new appliances too as the kitchen that we had inherited badly needed updating. The appliances are all finished in brushed chrome so hubby suggested that we should change all the sockets and light switches to match.
We went to B & Q to see what they had available and I have to admit that I was very surprised by the choice! Apart from the standard white finished sockets and switches there were chrome, brushed chrome, brass and black. Within the range of sockets there were then variations on the actual socket holes and rocker switches - some were plain black, some were chrome with a black outline etc.
We chose the ones made by Volex in the brushed chrome effect with plain black holes and switches. The double socket is currently on sale in B & Q at £9.48 and, although I can't remember how much we actually paid for ours, I am sure it was round about that amount.
The socket comes in plastic packaging complete with all fittings and instructions for installation.
I will just say here that if you are not completely confident that you know what you are doing DO NOT attempt any electrical work yourself. Many years ago I was doing some decorating in the house that I owned at the time. I decided to unscrew the light switch in order to neaten the wallpaper around the edge of it and I received a massive electric shock! The previous owners had fitted the switch badly and had left a bare wire touching the internal metal housing of the switch! Luckily I was wearing trainers and suffered no real ill effects but it reminded me that electricity is not for playing about with.
The sockets that we bought for our kitchen were all the double sockets and they measure 151mm by 91mm by 28.2mm so they don't stand too proud from the walls.
Our electrician fitted them so I can't comment on how easy or otherwise this process was. Once he had finished fitting them all we were really impressed with just how smart they looked and how they fitted in with the rest of the kitchen.
Having used them for about two years now - I am still impressed with them. There have been no problems with the operation of the sockets and their switches.
Being brushed chrome they do show the finger marks a little but they are very easy to wipe clean and come up as good as new each time.
In conclusion I would definitely recommend these sockets - they look smart, work well and didn't cost a fortune.
Summary: I would chose these again!
