Advantages: Good colours, bright, good nib, don't leak through page
Disadvantages: Not as easy to hold as Stabilo Boss, run out much more quickly
As a student I get through quite a lot of highlighters when making notes or highlighting my statute books and so on. I do find that branded highlighters can be quite expensive, so even though I was a bit of unsure how the quality would compare I decided to try out these WH Smith own brand highlighters.
They come in a pack of four containing fairly typical colours, yellow, orange, green and pink. I was happy with this colour selection as I don't really need any more unusual colours and all I need are a few different ones. The highlighters look more basic than the branded Stabilo Boss ones as their shape is simpler. They are just straight up and down, wide but fairly thin, pens. They have changed from the ones pictured here. They are not particularly moulded to be comfy to hold, but they are fine. The lids are black with a clip bit on them. I have not really used the clip for anything but it could be useful to attach the pen to a folder temporarily to stop it slipping onto the floor while carrying stuff.
The quality of the pens seems pretty good at first. The colour comes out quite strongly and vibrantly. It is easy to read the highlighted text underneath and they do not try too dark or smudge. The colour does not go right through the pages and ruin the other side.
The nibs are typical of most highlighters as they are quite broad but tapered so you can use the whole of it to highlight in a thicker line, or turn it and only use the tip to highlight in a much thinner line for smaller writing or if you just want to be less noticeable with the highlighting.
I am very happy with the use of them as long as they last, and that is where the downside of these come in. They seem to have less ink inside them than Stabilo Boss so they do run out quicker. Depending on how much you use them, they could last either a couple of weeks or a few months if you don't use them much. During exam time I found they ran out too quickly for my liking, but I did go on to purchase another pack, so obviously I was still quite happy with them for the price. I can't remember exactly how much I paid but I know it was a lot less than the Stabilo Boss.
I would recommend these if you don't need to do absolutely loads of highlighting and you want to pay a bit less.
