WHSmith 4 Highlighters
Advantages: Good value for money
Disadvantages: Hard to see the yellow
Being a student, as many of you are probably aware, involves a great deal of highlighting things. While I'm not a big fan of highlighters (in fact, I find them quite annoying) sometimes they are necessary so that I can prove I have read extracts of text, rather than just photocopying a book or printing off the internet.
Having finally sucumbed to the idea of having to use these annoyingly colourful pens, I decided that the best place to try to get something like this that would: a) last a decent length of time and b) not be too expensive like the leading brands tend to be, would have to be WHSmith. Normally, I wouldn't use this store much, especially when you consider there are shops like Poundland that would probably be able to provide me with something similar, but I wanted to be sure the product would actually last this time, rather than breaking or running out of ink on me when I needed to use it for an assignment of some sort.
So, deciding WHSmith would be the store I should use to buy some highlighters, I headed inside and towards the stationery section of the store, which I found quite easily. Locating the highlighters wasn't too bad either, and I was more than happy with the price of these; £4. I thought this was more than reasonable for a pack of four highlighters, given that made them £1 each. I just hoped that they would last a decent amount of time.
I found that there wasn't too much packaging on these highlighters, just a piece of cardboard for the back that held the highlighters in place, and a plastic cover to protect them on the front, and so that you could see what colours you got inside the pack. (I got the traditional highlighter colours of green, yellow, orange and pink. I believe you can also buy blue and purple in the same range, though.) I like the fact that all the packaging was recyclable, as it meant that there was no bad effects on the environment from the packaging, even if not all of the highlighter itself could be recycled.
When it came to using the highlighters I found that they were easy enough to use, although at times the line they left on the page wasn't a solid one, with breaks in it, as if the fibres weren't level all the way across the nib of the highlighter. I found this was worse with the yellow than with any of the other colours, and that the yellow was also quite difficult to see on white paper at times because it wasn't a particularly vibrant yellow. However, I think the other three highlighters were great, and I would say I have no problem with them at all.
In terms of how long they lasted, I would say I bought them in June and they lasted through until December, and considering that I probably use them to highlight several pages a day every day, it's not bad at all. I would definitely be willing to buy these again, even though I'm not that keen on highlighters, and I would possibly even go as far as to say I would even buy the other additional colours; something I never usually do with highlighters.
Summary: Not bad at all!
