Brillo Pads
by Missfisher92
Brillo pads are intended to make scrubbing much easier. But does it?
Packaging.....
They come in a plastic box with like a foil wrapper on the top. All you have to do to open it is just rip the lid back. I think the shinyness of the foil is supposed to represent an amazing clean? They come in packs of 5 or 10. ...
What they look like....
When you take them out of the packaging they are just, square, hard, pink and grey pads.
How to use.....
You just wet the soap pad in some warm water and use from there. These foil pads also have a dried pink powder substance on them, don't worry it's only soap. When you are using the pads be prepared for the water t turn pink.
Contains.....
<5% non-ionic surfactants,
15%-30% soap,
Benzisothiazolinone.
My story....
For as long I can remember my household has always had brillo pads, I use them for cleaning the cooker out as well as the greasy tray after cooking a Sunday dinner. They do deliver what they promise. You don't have to scrub half as much, but before I use them I spray bleach, this makes the grease and hard stuff come off far easier.
Availability....
You can get these everywhere, from supermarkets to hardware stores. I know you can get the pack of 5s in the poundshop.
Price.....
Anything from a pound up!
Advantages...
The get the hard stuff off without giving you an aching arm and wrist.
They are cheap you can get them from about a pound.
Disadvantages...
It does not hurt, but when them tiny little metal wires get stuck in the skin, it's really uncomfortable and I don't like it. It does not bleed or anything, just strange.
I know I should expect it from metal but they don't half rust quick, and everywhere.
Summary...
A fantastic product that I think every kitchen should have, they say diamonds are a girls best friend, but I doubt they are when your scrubbing pots for an hour, I would do anything for a Brillo pad.
Would I recommend?
Without a doubt,they don't magically get your items clean but they do make it easier. Read the complete review |

Brillo Pads
by rolandrat
===Why I Got This===
Being the woman of the house I am responsible for buying all our cleaning supplies - as although my son and husband will sometimes use them, I am the one who does the purchasing.
I am not overly fond of cleaning and use mostly the sponge scourers which have one rough and one sponge side - but ... sometimes you need something a little stronger and that is why I purchased Brillo Pads.
===The Brand===
Brillo is the trading name for metal scouring pads made from steel wool and containing pink soap. The pads were patented in 1913 and later they were combined with the soap as we know them today. Made by S.C.Johnson - 'a family company'.
===The Product===
Transparent plastic carton containing 10 (or 5) square metal scouring pads - multi purpose.
The top is covered with a plasticised foil cover.
'Cleans to a brilliant shine.'
Image of Mr Muscle 'soap pads'.
Warning to avoid prolonged contact with skin and to wash and dry your hands after use.
Made in the EU.
Contents: 55 non-ionic surfactants, 11-30% soap . Also contains Benzisothiazolinone.
===Cost===
£1.50 for a box of 10 at Tesco.
===My Opinion===
I must admit that not being too well and energetic I try and do as little cleaning as I can safely get away with. Washing up of course needs doing on a daily basis and other jobs such as cleaning the cooker get done as as when I have to.
I have an old electric cooker which has seen better days. Cooking in our house is done student fashion - that is son cooks for himself as does my husband (who eats meat) and I just cook for myself. Now I can say I hardly ever get the cooker dirty - but the others are a different matter - making curries and stir-frys and leaving the cooker looking quite disgraceful.
Not feeling up to doing the cooker as and when it gets dirty - I then have a dried on set mess to contend with.
Previously I would buy the Tesco Everyday Value Soap Filled Pads when I ordered online but lately they are not available so I 'upgraded' to the original Brillo Pads.
I must say these pads keep their shape much better than the cheaper ones and do not go rusty and disintigrate as the others would do. However I was not unduly unhappy with the cheaper pads but find the Brillo Pads clean my messy cooker well.
I have loose metal rings on my cooker which I put in to soak while I use the dampened Brillo Pads to wipe over the top of the cooker. Then I use the pads to clean around the metal rings and afterwards wipe the whole lot down with a clean sponge pad soaked in clean water - if you do not clean most of the suds away you get a horrid smell when you start to use the cooker rings.
I am not very adventurous when using these pads and it is really only the cooker that I use them on.
The packaging has very limited information on it and I think it would be good if we were given more details of jobs these could be used for.
I only need to use one at a time and can dry them out and put them back in the tub they come in so they can last a week or two each. I always use rubber gloves when using these pads just to be on the safe side and not get scratched hands.
Every knows the name Brillo and I'm sure my mother also used to use them. S.C.Johnson state on t heir website 'that these pads can be used all around the house, in the garden or the garage for those tough jobs where other cleaners are ineffective'.
I did try them out gently on an old polished table that hubby had been putting greasy things on and I was very gentle so as only to take off the dirty layer - it worked well and I rinsed it immediately - but I would not really advice this and I a sure you should check any surface before using in case it causes damage.
Personally, although they cleaned my cooker top and front - cutting through the grease, they were not quite as abrasive as I had imagined which is why I have only given them 4 stars. Not having any of the Tesco Everyday ones for a proper comparison but to my mind, although not so well made the cheaper pads did tend to cut through the greasy marks better.
===Star Rating===
4 stars.
