Advantages: Great for tough cleaning jobs
Disadvantages: Harsh on skin
I decided to have a major spring clean last week and one part of the house that really did need some attention were the kitchen tiles. I knew that these were going to need some pretty harsh cleaning so brought some Brillo pads to see if they would do a better job than a normal spray cleaner which I would normally use.
You can find Brillo pads down the cleaning products aisle in most supermarkets or general household goods stores such as Wilkinsons or The Range. They aren't cheap as I brought a pack of 10 for £1.15.
Within your clear plastic tray with silver foil lid you get 10 black find steel pads. Each pad is already laced with a pink looking soap. Considering these already have the soap on them, they don't smell good at all, but I am pleased to say that the metal smell these give off is not left on your surfaces after use.
Instructions for use are simple. You simply damp the sponge and scrub. The fine steel gets into grime and grease a lot easier than a normal cleaner with a cloth would. The worse area in my kitchen were the tiles behind the oven so this for me was the test at how good these really were. I have to say I was pretty impressed. Very little effort was needed from me to shift the built up grime which proved that these little gems really do work well. Once you have removed the grime, simply wipe over your surface with a damp cloth to remove the excess soap. If you don't do this then you will end up with a pink film over your surface once the soap has dried so I recommend you do this straight away.
I was really impressed with the end results. My tiles were sparkling clean and had took very little effort to get them that way. When using these on tiles I would recommend you beware of the grout as if you get the soap into grout then you end up with pink tinged grout! It does wipe off grout if you remove it immediately but don't leave it to dry.
My only real gripe with these is that they did leave my hands feeling very dry. I would recommend you use gloves when using these as they are pretty harsh, especially if you already suffer with dry or sensitive skin.
This is a product from SC Johnson which is a well known company so you know you are going to be getting a good product with these Brillo pads. If you want more information on them and what they contain then you can visit their website at WWW.SCJOHNSON.CO.UK.
Overall I have now decided to keep a pack of these in my cupboards for such occasions again. They don't dry out so will last forever, therefore you will never get any wastage. I wouldn't use these for day to day cleaning as they are pretty harsh and for me are only needed on tough to clean stains such as grease and quite hardened grime. General cleaning only really requires a less harsh spray cleaner. However these really did do a good job on tough stains and made the job very easy.
For that reason I would definitely use these again and recommend you use them too if you have a tough job on your hands. Recommended.
Summary: A great cleaning item
