Brillo Pads for brilliant cleaning!
Member Name: SusanLesley
Advantages: Cheap, easy to use, work very well
Disadvantages: A bit messy
As with most people I am not a great lover of housework and one of my least favourite jobs is cleaning the oven. I use a spray on the base of the oven, on the grill pan and on the metal shelves. This removes a lot of the marks but the metal shelves usually need a bit of extra help.
Enter the little miracle that is the Brillo Pad.
Brillo Pad is the trade name for a scouring pad made by S C Johnson (a family company!) and used for cleaning metal. It is made from steel wool which has been impregnated with soap. The concept was actually patented in 1913 so they have been around for a long time - they're even older than I am!
Brillo Pads are available in packs of five or ten and they currently cost £1.20 for ten in Tesco's so that's just 12p per pad.
The packaging is basic but perfect for purpose. The pads come in a clear plastic tub similar to the plastic punnets that contain soft fruit on the summer supermarket shelves. The tub is sealed by a silver coloured peel off lid. The reason I say that it is perfect for purpose is the fact that, once the Brillo Pad has been used - assuming that it is worth saving for another time, it can be popped back into the plastic tub. If the pads came in a cardboard box this would get damp and disintegrate if the damp Brillo Pads were put back after use.
The Brillo Pads are grey in colour and look like little square cushions with pink soap showing through amongst the strands of grey wire wool.
In order to use a Brillo Pad you just have to wet it to activate the soap and then rub it across the dirty metal that you wish to clean. The pads are pliable and it is easy to manoeuvre them around the individual metal rods on the metal cooker shelves.
The cleaning effect of the combination of wire wool and soap is extremely good. With not too much elbow grease (I like that bit!) the shelves end up sparkling clean. It even works on the bar b que shelf and that gets VERY marked and, of course, the marks are burnt on. A Brillo Pad gets it clean every time!
The only problem with these pads is the fact that the cleaning process leaves behind a thick pink, gooey, soapy mess although, to be fair, it does rinse off very easily. I do find that my hands get very dirty and it would probably be better if I wore rubber gloves but I am afraid that I hate the things so I end up pretty filthy when I have finished with my Brillo Pad. Still a good wash with some decent soap followed by a helping of hand cream sorts this problem out without much difficulty.
As the pads are made from wire wool they can be a bit scratchy and can irritate the skin if you are sensitive in that way so it is worth being aware of that fact before you decide whether to use these. I have to say that I have never had any problems in this respect - maybe I'm just hard skinned!
This is one of those products that hasn't really changed since it was first patented all those years ago which presumably shows that they got it right first time! After all - if it ain't broke don't fix it!
I don't have to use Brillo Pads very often but I always have a supply in the cupboard as they do the job brilliantly and I would definitely recommend them to anyone for cleaning those oven shelves!
Summary: A brilliant cleaning product
