Buster Kitchen Sink Fresh
Advantages: cleans pipes, keeps away odours
Disadvantages: no pleasant scent, quite pricey
If any room in my house needs to be spotless it's the kitchen (followed in close proximity by the bathroom). I like sparkling worktops, a glistening floor and a lemon fresh scent. This is not always achievable and, in reality, not a practical look to maintain unless you ban all cooking from the room! However, as part of my obsession, I am always looking out for, and trying, new products in the hope that they will provide the solution to all my cleaning needs. When I came across the Kitchen Sink Fresh product by Buster I instantly knew I had to give it a go, being familiar with the brand as I use their bathroom sink product (see earlier review!).
The treatment is said to 'stop fat build-up, kill germs and smell fresh'. The treatment comes in a bright green plastic bottle with a tight screw top lid (the child proof type that you need to push down to open). Each bottle contains sufficient product for 10 doses, and is priced at around £3.50. On the bottle there is a picture of a plughole as if the centre of a flower with petals surrounding it - I'm doubtful if anything can make a sink smell of flowers, but a nice marketing ploy none-the-less.
Within the bottle there are lots of little greeny white balls - slightly larger than the 'granules' that the product literature describes. These granules work by foaming up and clinging to the pipe to clean, removing food debris, grease and limescale whilst the bactericides contained kill germs and smells. On opening the bottle, there is no real scent to the product, so you do wonder how this will leave the sink smelling fresh and clean.
To use the product, you simply pour a capful of the granules down the plughole, having first flushed it through with hot water. You can then leave the product to work and flush again with hot water (anything longer than 10 minutes is recommended - I usually leave this as long as possible to ensure a good clean). Once applied, you can see a little foaming if you look down the plughole, but it is not a really obvious action. It is really quick and simple to apply the treatment, but I do find it difficult to ensure that all the granules make their way down the plughole. I am invariably left with a few sitting on the brim of the plughole, so there is some product wastage with each application. I also struggle to get 10 applications from the bottle, usually achieving around 8.
It is difficult to verify the full effects of this treatment as I cannot see within the pipes to be able confirm that all grease, food debris and limescale has been removed. However, I can say that after use my sink smells clean and there are no unpleasant odours escaping from the plughole. I usually use this treatment once a week and this seems to keep all smells as bay, so I would definitely recommend the treatment for this effect at least. However, it doesn't give the sink any particular 'fresh' scent and I would rather that it had a lemon fragrance. I can appreciate why it doesn't though, as you may feel that this is just working to 'mask' the odours and, by having no scent at all, I am confident that the treatment is working effectively.
I would recommend this product as a useful addition to the kitchen cleaning products you have, but it doesn't remove the need to give your sink a good scrub and clean (preferably with a scented cleaner!).
Summary: Handy to have in the house
