Ecover Squirteco cleaner claims to be naturally powerful by combining natural ingredients to clean all of the washable surfaces around your house, including glass, by using it's blend of natural plant extracts. It is, of course, more environmentally friendly than the other cleaners on the shelf and you will pay £2.50 for a 500ml bottle from Tesco for those green and vegan credentials.
The cleaner comes in a very heavy spray bottle, I always think it is odd that Ecover use so much plastic in their bottles and that they are not made from recycled plastic. The plastic is type 2 and can be recycled if you are one of the lucky ones who have facilities in your area to do this. Refills are also available but I don't know where you can get them, certainly nowhere near me.
I have used my bottle of Squirteco in my bathroom and kitchen and on glass, in theory it sounds nice to only need one bottle of cleaning solution to clean all of your surfaces but in practice it is a different story.
The Squirteco cleaner performs well in the kitchen on worktops leaving them sparkling clean. It does not like any real dirt however and barely makes a dent on greasy marks and forget using this to clean your cooker. It does leave the tiles nice and sparkly and shiny but then any cleaner does that.
Moving on to the bathroom we have another poor performance. I liked the fact that it left the tiles and my chrome fittings with a nice sparkle but it really did not cope well with soap scum or dirt in the shower needing several applications and a lot of elbow grease to get the job done.
The one area where it performed well was on glass, an area where most multisurface cleaners fail miserably and in fact on glass I would say that it was as good as my Mr Muscle glass cleaner. It sprayed on with a slight foam onto the glass and wiped away easily making a squeaky noise and leaving a smear free finish.
Ecover claim that the Squirteco cleaner has a fresh plant based fragrance but what they fail to mention is that the cleaner also smells slightly of vinegar mixed in with plants. This explains why the cleaner was so good on glass but I don't want a house smelling like a fish and chip shop.
Overall a fairly poor performance from Ecover, you are paying for the eco friendly and vegan labels rather than the cleaning power of the product. I will continue to use stardrops which costs less than half the price and also has green credentials.
If you are concerned with the environment, and want to do your bit to help, while keeping your surfaces clean, then this is the product for you. More reasonably priced than some of the other green products such as Method, it does a great job in the kitchen, cleaning our granite and wooden benchtops perfectly. If you have a family and are concerned by the amount of chemicals that you use around the home then this is an excellent choice. Spray works fine, and you don't need to use much to get great cleaning results. Scent is lovely - like most Ecover products - it's not too overpowering. Refills can also be bought from various online retailers which means that you can get the cleaner for less and also reduce the amount of rubbish that you have to recycle or throuw away - more green points!! A lovely product that does what it claims to do with no fuss, and better for the environment too. A definite winner.
