Whilst on offer I decided to try the Ecover toilet cleaner; I received mine for just £1 but it is normally priced at around £2 for 750ml, so is dearer than many toilet cleaners.
It looks inconspicuous in its standard white bottle whilst a lot of other brands are bright colours and flashy writing.
Ecover is a brand, which aims to make their products more environmentally, animal and human friendly. They do this by using where ever possible, recyclable products and naturally occurring chemicals and plants extracts which in turn are less harmful to the water ways and plant. Not only this but you can obtain re-fills for you bought product once the bottle is empty. Foe more information and quick guide to where re-fills are available see www.ecover.com
This product is also suitable for use in septic tanks.
On opening the child lock type screw cap I am surprised, not bleach smell knocking me out, in fact I had to sniff it to identify that it was "Ocean Waves".
The bottle has the standard tilt to it with a nozzle on the end so that you can squirt under the toilet rim with ease. No problems on that count, the bottle is pliable and liquid is easily directed to the appropriate places.
The bottle suggests that you squirt in your liquid under the rim and leave for a few minutes and scrub with a toilet brush if needed, and then flush.
****DOES IT DO THE JOB****
It says it is triple action "cleans, decalcifies and freshens"
The liquid itself on squirting is a creamy white colour and has the ocean waves smell, but it is not at all over powering in fact after a few minutes I hardly noticed it. This is good for my lungs I guess but I personally would like the smell to last a little longer so I know I have used it and the toilet remains with that "fresh" smell.
I clean as per instructions sometimes and yes it does clean, not that my toilet is ever horrendously unclean so it doesn't have too much of a task really. Saying that I so leave the cleaner in the toilet bowl to soak overnight sometimes to try and reach the parts I can't. I have to say though I do notice that there is a slight build up of calcification just as the bend of the toilet bowl starts that I can't reach by scrubbing brush. Even after soaking it has not disappeared and I don't recall this with stronger bleach products.
The other downside for people maybe that it does not state whether it has disinfecting properties and it's germ killing capabilities - so I assume there is none and I can't find this on the web page either.
Would I recommend it? Undecided it depends on your stance. Yes as it is a "green" product but I would have to say that if you want a spotless toilet you might need to buy bleach one also and use that occasionally to remove build up of calcification. There is also the unclear issue of whether it's germ killing/disinfectant; you may want something stronger.

Ecover Toilet Cleaner is an ecologically sound and extremely effective toilet cleaner, with no fumes to cause problems for the sensitive.
The cleaner comes in a 750ml plastic bottle, which is entirely recyclable and made from recycled materials. Once it is empty, the bottle can be put out with the rest of the recycling. The cleaner itself is a thick translucent liquid. The standard cleaner warnings apply: avoid skin and eye contact, and don't ingest.
To use it, you simply pour it into the toilet and scrub with your toilet brush. This is more work than most cleaners, but it has excellent effects - even beginning to remove the limescale buildup that other cleaners had been unable to touch. However this also means the toilet is useable immediately after cleaning, instead of leaving it to work. This is an advantage in a house with one toilet, or children or pets who have to be kept clear. Once you have finished scrubbing, flush a few times to clear the residue. If you need to, it can also be used under the toilet rim as well as in the bowl.
We switched to Ecover because the fumes from most "Drop it in and leave it" cleaners were causing respiratory problems for the cats, even with all the windows open. Ecover solved this issue immediately. It has a pleasant subtle scent, rather than a chemical one, and isn't intrusive. If you don't like it, the scent clears quickly with the windows open.
As with all Ecover products, the focus is on a good product which is enviromentally friendly. This cleaner is entirely plant-based and instead of chlorine and petro-chemicals, one of the active ingredients is very concentrated citric acid. This means it breaks down very quickly and so is safe to use with sceptic tank systems.
I've been delighted with this product. It's not just good for the environment, it's made cleaning days much easy and simpler, and it doesn't stink the house up. I would highly recommend it.
Lets get one thing straight, Ecover toilet cleaner probably isn't the greatest toilet cleaner in the world, it's also probably not the cheapest, but I'm guessing that you buy this product because it makes you think you're doing a little bit for the environment (somehow?!?) and that makes you feel a little bit warm inside everytime you squirt it down your toilet!
In fairness, its not a bad product. The best thing about it is the smell. Whereas with some toilet cleaners you quite literally have to hold your breath, as you liberally squirt the throne, for fear of choking on the noxious fumes, Ecover has a mild and subtle scent which won't leave your eyes watering for hours afterwards. It also does a decent job of cleaning the toilet (not bad from a toilet cleaner!).
It tends to cost between £1.50-£2 and is available from most of the supermarket chains along with a few local shops I've discovered recently. Overall, there are certainly cheaper and more effective cleaners out there, but if you want to do your bit to prevent global warming AND have a clean toilet - this is your product!
I don't like toilet cleaners. I really really don't. They are super strong and smell awful and make my eyes water. But without them your toilet becomes something out of a horror movie. I used to spend half an hour with rubber gloves and a scrubbing brush and soap in the bathroom, ending with a slightly cleaner toilet bowl and a frown. But no more! Since I used the other ecover products I decided to try the toilet cleaner.
At £1.60 for 750ml, it is not too pricey, though not as cheap as tesco value! It has a safety screw cap, I hate those things but if you have kids it's better to be safe. It comes in pine scent (normal toilet cleaner scent) which is pleasantly mild smelling, not overpowering like most toilet cleaners. You simply squeeze around the rim and leave for an hour, I do it last thing at night so it has overnight to work.
I found that with the first use it made my toilet shiny and clean WITH NO SCRUBBING! (I was so happy) I use it once a week and ever since I have had no fear of my bathroom. I am now a toilet cleaner convert, but only for ecover.

Again not an eco nut just think that where you can help the environment its a good thing. This cost me £1.50 for 750ml, standard plastic type bottle with a slightly angled neck and a light blue lid, Ecover printed on the front of it. The bottle can be recycled. Again as far as ecologically friendly items go the pricing is not too bad and more importantly it works.
I won't bore you with how to use it, its toilet cleaner I am sure you know and if you don't you should be ashamed I tells ya!!
As far as the cleaning ability, this is the least favourite of the Ecover products I have tried- I think its ok but whereas the other products I have tried can easily compete with other products this can't- I have had better cleaning ability from other products and at the end of the day you need it too work! I found that it took a lot of scrubbing compared to other products I have tried and more of the product too. I do clean my loo regularly so its not as though it was very mucky either.
As for the smell its a very heavy pine smell, that hits you in the back of the throat and stays there, quite chemically smelling all things considered.
I am looking for another eco friendly toilet cleaner as this does not cut the mustard.
I have tried many ecological cleaning products over the years, but will always resort back to Ecover toliet cleaner. It has a nice 'pine fresh' fragrance, a good thick consistancy, and seems to keep the toilet clean. I don't like to use too many chemicals and artificial scents in my house, and I find that this toilet cleaner, smells clean but not chemically.
I primarily use this product though because it isn't harmful to the environment and doesn't damage aquatic life which is important to me. I think we need to be careful about what we pour down our drains as we may not know the future consequences.
It is about £1.50 for a bottle, but I find that if I'm careful a little can go a long way. The bottle has a good shape which can allow you to squirt the liquid under the rim of the loo. The thick consistency is about right and covers the whole basin with just one squirt round the rim.
I highly recommend this product and wouldn't use anything else.
Cleaning up The World
As anyone who has read any of my early reviews will know, Im a bit of a greenie and a huge fan of NATURAL!!! Natural colours, natural fabrics, natural stuff in general, and in particular natural cleaners. Doesnt matter whether were talking recycled loo roll, plant based face wash, or opening a window instead of spraying half a tonne of fake air freshener, its all the same to me. Natural. Say it slowly. Think about what it means. And about what the alternatives mean too
So much of what we have around and about us these days is far from natural. We dont seem to mind clogging up the planet for the sake of a bit of comfort in having our stuff around us. And everything is so completely dependant on chemicals I have secret theories that chemical plants and drug companies rule the world, but more about that in a separate review I think! Chemicals in cleaning products invade our bodies, change our inner workings, affect our fertility and our future babies and theirs. And all in the name of making our lives easier, so we dont have to put any elbow grease in to clean the cooker or the sink or the loo. Our lives are so busy now that companies market products to us on the basis of saving us time and energy, but what theyre actually doing is, in many ways, killing us slowly. I say its time we all stopped pretending that chemicals in our home is good news, acceptable, OKAY. I dont think it is okay. Which is why I use Ecover products.
Using Ecover is a way to stand up and be counted. To say a big. Loud NO to all the companies out there that have got us hooked on chemical based, toxic products to clean our lovely little homes within an inch of their red-bricked lovely little lives.
Who are Ecover?
Well, they are the revolutionaries who first stood up and said wait, there is another way! In Belgium, in 1980, Ecover was founded, as a pioneering company, selling phosphate free products. As a company, Ecover is very concerned about environmental issues and in 1992 they opened the worlds first ecological factory it has a green live roof! This product is actually made at this factory.
Every part of their business is covered by ecological policy, not just the products and production of them, but everything else, like marketing and sales (for example, they will refill your old bottles of washing up liquid, collecting them and delivering them back, free of charge. You just pay for the actual refill pretty good!)
Ecover now have sites in the UK and USA, and sell their products in over 20 countries worldwide.
The Loo-Cleaning Experience
I am not the worlds greatest house-wife. Im not a big fan of washing up, or hovering (thats why I have wooden floors !) and cleaning the bathroom and particularly the loo is not right up there at the top of the list of household chores that I enjoy. But it has to be said that using this Ecover loo cleaner is actually a pleasant experience in the sense of how it smells and looks. Its an opaque liquid none of this bright blue stuff that you just know is capable of killing the odd dolphin and it smells divine. I know thats a crazy thing to say about loo cleaner, but its true. The one I use is called Pine fresh, and its like being in a Scottish pine forest in the early morning, with pine needles crunching under your feet and the sun sparking off the dew. Aaaaah. What a nice image to have fleeting through your brain when youve got your marigold clad hands down the loo pan! The reason for this overwhelmingly natural smell is simple. Ecover use natural, plant based ingredients, which make for good cleaning and good smelling!
Ive been using Ecover for about 5 years now, and have found it to be a much better cleaner than the brightly coloured, highly chemical alternatives. Yes, I get my hand or the loo brush down there and give a good clean, so theres none of the leave it for an hour and then flush kind of thing, but a little elbow grease never hurt anyone and to me its far more preferable to flushing a cupful of chemical out into the sea every time I want a clean and sparkling loo.
Ecover is to be found in an opaque white bottle, with a pale cornflower blue cap, and ECOVER in big blue and green letters on the front. I buy the 750ml bottle and find it lasts for a good 4 months. The bottle is made of recycled and recyclable plastic, and are designed to be refilled wherever there are the facilities to do this. I have to say, Ive never partaken of refilling as there isnt anywhere close that Ive found to do it. I just put the bottle out to be recycled with my 2 weekly recycling collection.
On the back of the bottle, Ecover state their intentions for the product, including telling us that there are no petrochemicals in it, and no chemical residues and that it has triple action of cleaning, decalcifying and freshening you loo.
Ecover are also against animal testing, their products have a minimal effect on aquatic life, are biodegradable, and can be used if you have a septic tank.
The all important cost!
I bought my last bottle of Ecover at Tesco, and it cost me £1.28 for a 750ml bottle.
To compare it with Harpic Power Plus loo cleaner, which costs £1.49 for the same size bottle and it packed full of harmful chemicals, Id say the Ecover route is cheaper, better for our health, better for the environment and actually, better all round!
My Final Thoughts
Its not a hard choice. Well, I dont think it is. Im glad there is a product out there that can help me to make a difference to the world I live in. People all over the world now are so much more aware than ever before of the impact our choices and actions have on the planet, but sometimes its hard to change, or its hard to find an alternative to what youve used and you parents have used for years. But once youve done it, youll wish you did it years ago. Its not hard at all really. In the end, things are only as difficult as we make them. So go on. Save the world buy Ecover!
