I am not particularly loyal to any brand of dishwasher salt but will buy whatever is the best value at the time. I last bought this packet of 2kg Finish dishwasher salt from Asda as it was on offer for £1.40 which is a good price as it can be up to £2.70 but most supermarkets will have it on offer from time to time and I just keep my eye out for the best bargain.
Like most dishwashers mine will alert me that it needs filling up with salt by a red flashing indicator light and as long as I have some salt in I will fill it up straight away as I do think that it makes a big difference to the finished result of your dishes and glasses. I notice that my glasses especially are looking a bit dull just before the salt needs replacing.
The packet is made of plastic and is blue with the Finish logo. It tells you that it is performance salt and that it fights limescale and watermarks. It is quite hard to open with your fingers as the plastic is quite hard but I will just snip a corner off and then secure it with a clothes peg. I have found that if I don't secure the bag the salt will easily spill out if the bag is moved.
Although the gap in my dishwasher is quite large I will sometimes use a wide funnel to help to pour the salt into the hole especially if the bag is new when it can be a bit heavy to control and the salt does spill on the bottom of the dishwasher, although it does dissolve in the next wash. I would say that a 2kg bag will last me about four to six refills and I probably do this around every month to six weeks so it works out at good value especially if you can get it on offer. In my opinion this dishwasher salt is very good and does as good a job as any other salt. Everything is shiny and clean and I don't often notice any watermarks or other smudges after washing.
This Finish salt is said to be 99.9% pure salt and it is recommended as the number one salt by manufacturers such as Hotpoint, Candy and Electrolux. As long as I can still get it while it is on offer I will buy it again as it is an essential part of the dishwashing process which at the end of the day beats washing up by hand every time.
I bought this product as I received a voucher for money off - which made it cheaper to buy than my usual choices.
I have purchased it before - but at £1.60 for a 2kg bag in both Tesco and Sainsburys, it isn't the cheapest option and I have opted for Stores own versions or Wilko's 2kg bag of dishwasher salts which is £1.23. Salts are used in the dishwasher to provide soft water so that scaly deposits are not left on the dishes - but seeing as the lower priced ones have always done a reasonable job, it has been a while since Finish was scooped into my dishwasher.
To use: fill the tank with salt as per the instructions of your dishwasher manufacturer. Keep out of reach of children.
~~Is there really any difference between Finish dishwasher salt and the others? Salt is salt isn't it?~~
Yes and no. Finish salt is 99.9% pure and the blurb on the bag proclaims it fights water marks on your dishes and limescale build up in your machine. It is also the number one recommended salt by a host of dishwasher manufactures such as AEG, Candy, Hotpoint and Electrolux. It is easily soluble and doesn't damage the built-in water softener.
To see if I could note a visual difference between Finish and other dishwasher salts, I poured some out alongside a scoop of Sainsburys dishwasher salt. The little round granules of salt looked very similar at first glance - the main difference was whilst the Sainsburys granules were mostly white in colour, the Finish granules were a mix of white and clear, transparent granules. Is this an indication of the purity which they advertise? As a layman I can't answer that.
~~But does it make any difference to the dishes or the machine?~~
Actually, I think it does - a little. My machine seems to smell cleaner. I can't see any obvious change to the dishwashing results though. Much depends on what dishwasher tablets you use on that score.
When you buy this salt you have to buy into the 'recommended by manufactures' sell. If you trust the manufacturers word, which presumably is backed up by science and testing - then this is the dishwasher salt for you.
For me - yes, I think it's an excellent dishwasher salt. But it is still pricy. And ultimately, I don't think there is enough difference between this and the cheaper ones to worry me overly much. It also has the disadvantage that it comes in a bag. The bagged products are unwieldy to use and difficult to store. I usually fasten them up with a clothes peg - but it's not ideal. There is always the chance of them spilling out in the sink cupboard. Personally, I prefer dishwasher salt which comes in a cardboard box with a pourable spout.
Still, if money was no object I would buy this salt often - but it is, so I won't. I shall continue to buy it whenever it is on offer or I have a voucher.
4 dooyoo stars - one lost for the price.
