HG Hagesan Mould Remover
Advantages: removes mould easily
Disadvantages: strong bleach smell
I was recommended the HG Mould Remover Spray by a friend after complaining about the black mould and mildew that had started to appear in the corner of my bathtub where it met the wall. I had tried all sorts of bleaches and products (and a lot of scrubbing) to remove this but to no avail. It was really unsightly and I can't bear a dirty looking bathroom, so I was keen to try anything that could help with the problem. My friend highly recommended it and told me that I could purchase it at Lakeland, so off I went and purchased myself a bottle of 0.5 litre for £5.
The spray comes in a white UPVC plastic spray bottle, with trigger spray nozzle. When you but the spray, the nozzle attachment is separate and you need to fit the tubing and the nozzle yourself (I personally found this a little tricky, but that's just me!). The bottle has a child proof safety cap upon purchase. The bottle actually looks rather industrial and less like domestic cleaners that I have used previously. The labelling is bright yellow and red.
HG Hagesan Mould Spray removes all black and brown stains caused by mould, fungus, moss and algae inside and outside. It is suitable for cleaning the tiled walls in the bathroom, as well as grouting in bathrooms and kitchens, plant boxes, toilets but not on wood.
To apply, you simply spray directly onto the surface that you wish to treat. As the spray has a bleaching action, is recommended that you perform a patch test on an area before applying all over. The product should be left on the surface for 30 minutes and then wiped off.
I found the spray relatively easy to apply, the nozzle was quite powerful. However, when I applied to the grouting on my tiles I was worried about whether it would work as the liquid was really runny and proceeded to simply run down the walls immediately. The product also had a REALLY strong smell of bleach, even with my window wide open I found this a bit much. This smell really carried throughout the house, so I would recommend that you apply this whilst children are out if applicable. Given the smell and the obvious high concentration of bleach in this product, I always apply wearing rubber gloves to protect my skin and now, having ruined a pair of trousers by getting the liquid on them, always wear old clothes too.
Having left the spray to work for the 30 minutes recommended treatment time, I return to my bathroom (complete with overpowering bleach aroma) to rinse off. I use my showerhead to just rinse the walls and bathtub edges, and the product is removed easily. I wouldn't say that my tiles were left sparking clean, but there was a real improvement in appearance. The grout was definitely whitened and was obviously less grubby to the eye. Most importantly - the unsightly brown/blackish mould stains that were lurking in the corners of my bath had almost all disappeared. I was able to remove the remainder with a little gentle scrubbing. The spray is really effective and left my bathroom looking and feeling really clean.
I use about half the bottle per application and I would say that an application is needed every three-four months just to freshen up the bathroom - the mould hasn't reappeared but I am so pleased with the results that it gives that I like to apply every now and then to keep my bathroom clean. Therefore I but a new bottle approximately once every 6 months, which at £5 a bottle is pretty good value. The only real negative about this product is that it is obviously very harsh chemically and smells really strong, but I think that it's worth putting up with the smell for the results that it gives - just ensure that you keep your room well ventilated!
Summary: Excellent Results.
