Advantages: A great outdoor disinfectant
Disadvantages: An awful smell!
Jeyes fluid has to be one of the most powerful outdoor disinfectants that has ever been manufactured. A 300ml can costs £4.99, but this is concentrate and the entire can will make nearly six litres of heavy duty disinfectant.
Jeyes fluid was originally patented as a disinfectant fluid in the late 1800`s, the business was founded by John Jeyes and it was granted the Royal Warrant in 1896. Jeyes still supplies the Royal household to this day.
Jeyes also produce Parazone and Bloo for toilets, another two ground breaking products used to kill germs.
Jeyes fluid comes in a navy blue tin that is trimmed with red. The tin has a red childproof cap.
Anyone who has never encountered Jeyes fluid will probably recoil at the powerful smell but the liquid is capable of neutralising the most offensive of smells. The thick dark oily liquid dilutes easily and usually it is only necessary to make up a small amount at any one time.
We always keep a tin in the shed, it has many outdoor uses.
But we have an old bucket which is kept especially for diluting and mixing the potent liquid in.
Our outdoor domestic drains get treated with Jeyes fluid at least twice a year, if we have had any type of drain blockage then it will be more.
In the summer months Jeyes fluid is especially useful for cleaning the wheelie bins, just get the hose pipe ready, put a small amount of neat Jeyes fluid into the bin and give it a thorough hosing. The bin will look cleaner, it will smell fresh and it will be relatively germ free. Most households only get their wheelie bins emptied once a fortnight now so if we have a spell of hot weather it does help to hose the bin regularly using Jeyes fluid.
Jeyes fluid has many uses in and around the garden, it is the ideal solution for cleaning dirty patio`s and paths.
If you have a greenhouse then a solution of the fluid can be used to scrub the greenhouse out at the end of the season. If you have a poly tunnel that has turned green then it will scrub up well using a solution of the fluid.
Our waterbutt gets treated to a clean out usuing Jeyes fluid too.
It is pefect for cleaning any animal housing and will effectively kill the Bird Flu virus. Some of our local allotment holders use it to disnfect their pots and seed trays. One or two of the gardeners have used a very very weak solution to kill fly on the brassica plants, they swear by it but not for me thanks!
If you have an outside toilet then it will soon take care of any unwanted smells.
Just remember that Jeyes fluid has a potent smell that clings, so anything that you clean using it will still smell of the fluid for a long time afterwards.
Jeyes fluid is available in a handy trigger spray bottle as well now.
For outside cleanliness it takes some beating.
Summary: Brilliant for drain cleaning, path and patio cleaning and those summer wheelie bin blues!
