Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner
Advantages: Makes cleaning the oven easier
Disadvantages: Harsh on skin
I don't think I am alone when saying that cleaning the oven is one of the most vile household jobs on the planet, hence why I don't do it as often as I should. This tends to come back to bite me on the backside though as if I did it more often, it wouldn't be such a horrid task when I do have to tackle it.
We only had our new oven in May when we had the kitchen done, but it doesn't take long to get greasy and grimy so have cleaned it out far too many times for my liking already. I searched Wilkinson's shelves before tackling the job to try and find a decent oven cleaner, and without knowing much about what any of them do, I went for the Mr Muscle one in the end, purely because I regularly use other products in the range and really rate them highly. I paid £1.99 for a can of this stuff which I thought was quite a decent price.
Mr Muscle is manufactured by S C Johnson, a leading brand in my opinion so I had high hopes for their oven cleaner. I read the label before starting as I had no idea how to use the product for the best results and it basically said that I spray the stuff into the oven, leave it to foam up and get into the grease and dirt to lift it, then wipe away with a cloth! I had visions of my previous oven cleaning attempts and I really could not imagine it being that easy as I usually end up with grease and other not very nice stuff all over me and I get through countless scourer's and cloths in the process.
From what I could gather from the label, this was pretty harsh stuff, though I suppose it had to be if it was going to remove oven grease with such ease. It recommended that you use rubber gloves for the job, and I followed the instructions to a tee. Due to its harshness, this isn't a versatile cleaner than you can use on other surfaces, it is purely an oven cleaner and nothing else and you have to be very careful to use it quite sparingly and not get it on any other surfaces if possible and not on your skin either as it could lead to burns!
As for the product itself, I sprayed it on the bottom of the oven and watched as it foamed up. There was a little fizzing noise too which indicated to me that the cleaner was doing its job of getting right into the grease to release it so I could wipe it off. I wasn't sure how long to leave it for so I left it to 'do its thing' for around 5 minutes and went back for a look. It wasn't obvious from looks alone as to whether or not it had done the job so I got a sponge scouring pad and wiped over the area I had sprayed over.
The results were pleasantly surprising. I wouldn't completely agree with their claims that you only need to wipe gently over the area and the grease is gone. I did have to use the scouring side of the sponge and a certain degree of elbow grease was also required but the job was far easier than I had expected it to be, and it took far less elbow grease than if I had used a standard cleaner.
This is the first designated oven cleaner I had tried and in the past had just used hot, soapy water and a lot of elbow grease or a standard cream cleaner and they aren't half as effective as this has been. Not only did it take less effort than normal, it took far less time too which was an added bonus.
In summary, this is a decent oven cleaner. It is well priced, works well and saves you both time and effort. It isn't quite as simple as it makes out to be and a little bit of effort is required but the foaming up obviously did lift the grease enough to make the job a far easier task than it could have been which means it gets a thumbs up from me.
Summary: A decent oven cleaner
