Mr Muscle Window and Glass Cleaner
Advantages: Quick to use, not very labour intensive, leaves glass clean and sparkling
Disadvantages: It's not Windolene! Runs down glass if you don't wipe off straight away
For this reason I also have in my cleaning cupboard a bottle of Mr Muscle Window and Glass cleaner. I picked it up one day on my usual shop but as it was so long ago I really can't remember how much I paid for it. A quick look online and I see that it currently sells at Tescos for £1.98. I only ever buy cleaning products when they're on offer so I know I won't have paid that much for it, although I don't think that's a bad price anyway really.
For your £1.98 you get 500ml of a green coloured liquid inside a squirt bottle. The bottle is a typical one for this kind of product; wide from the front, slimmer when looked at from the side and narrowing as it gets taller, with a squirt mechanism in the lid and handle. The bottle is clear so you can see how much product you have left but the accents on it are, like the liquid itself, green - apart from the Mr Muscle branding which is bright orange.
The label on the front tells us that this brand loves the jobs we hate and that it is non-smear and has added vinegar. Rather unusually there is no label on the back of the bottle, instead all other information is written on the reverse of the front label and so you have to read it through the liquid...not overly easy when the liquid is green. I would imagine some people find it difficult to read that label - I know I struggle and now, with my bottle half empty (ok, ok, half full seen as I'm trying to look on the positive side of life!) it is definitely much easier to read the information that is at the top of the label and so not covered by the liquid any more than it is to read the rest of it through the green. This label provides us with the usual information of how to use it (spray directly onto surface and wipe off with a clean cloth basically!), what it can be used on (windows, mirrors and other glass surfaces), warnings about keeping it away from children and not getting it in your eyes and contact details for the manufacturer (SC Johnson, in case you're interested). Disappointingly there is no indication of whether the bottle is recyclable when empty.
As I said, using this window cleaner is very easy, you simply spray it onto the surface you want to clean and then wipe it off with a clean cloth - much easier than the Windolene! I bought this specifically to use on a pair of internal glass doors that we have. Each door has fifteen panes of glass in it which means cleaning 60 panes of glass each time I clean them and to do this with a cream clearner would literally take me half the day so this liquid cleaner seemed like an ideal solution.
I tend to squirt each pane on one side of one door then starting at the top work my way down with a clean cloth, wiping the product off and buffing the glass as I go before starting on the next door. This probably only takes me about 10 minutes per side so cleaning this set of doors takes less than an hour, which is a much more acceptable amount of time when there are so many excellent reviews to read!
I find this window and glass cleaner more than acceptable for the job I use it for. It does get the glass clean and sparkly without much effort and doesn't leave any streaks behind if you give it a good buff and so I'm happy with it. The smell of it is in no way offensive but not one of my favourite smells either. It smells fresh and clean and, reassuringly, you can't smell the added vinegar to it, which was a slight worry for me when i first used it! But, for me, nothing will ever smell as good as Windolene!
One way in which this doesn't live up to Windolene is that when you spray it on, whilst it comes out in quite a fine mist initially, it soon turns to liquid again on the glass and starts running down the pane, collecting on the wooden part below. Luckily it loses it's green colour and doesn't stain my white paintwork but still, I would prefer it if it stayed on the glass. I suppose I could always just squirt one pane at a time and work my way down the door to stop this happening but I like to give the cleaner time to do its work before I wipe it off again.
Overall I'm happy enough with this window and glass cleaner from Mr Muscle. It gets the glass clean with very little effort and it lasts for a long time (I've had my bottle for well over a year now and have probably cleaned that set of doors 4 or 5 times with it and, as I said, it's now about half empty) so gives good value for money, but for me it doesn't give the sense of satisfaction that using Windolene does and I will continue to use that for my windows. but for internal glass such as doors, mirrors and tables then I would definitely consider using this if you don't already. If I was being really unbiased then I would give it 5 stars but alas, I'm not that nice! So I'm knocking one star off merely for the fact that it doesn't smell like Windolene and doesn't leave my house smelling like that either. Harsh I know!
Summary: A good window and glass cleaner for when I'm feeling lazy
