Mr Sheen Furniture Polish Anti-static
Advantages: cleans well, prevents dust build up
Disadvantages: can get messy around the spray nossle, scent doesn't linger
I don't exactly mind cleaning but I can certainly think of better things to do with my time (writing for Dooyoo being one of them!) I'm therefore continually on the look out to make my life easier although I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to shopping for cleaning products and will buy something if it catches my eye regardless of whether or not I need it at the time! I never quite realized how bad this had gotten till I looked through the cupboard for things to review and found about five versions of furniture polish! One of which was this - Mr Sheen furniture polish.
Most people will be aware of the use of polish for wooden surfaces and (if you're anything like me) then TV and even computer screens, but this polish goes one step further and claims to be effective on wood, glass, plastic, mirrors, paintwork, tiles and enamel.
Mr. Sheen Says...
Mr. Sheen seems incredibly proud of this product. Along with the claims above about the surfaces on which this will work, it also claims to remove dust, fingerprints and smudges without smearing. Apparently it also contains an anti-static dustguard. This means that this polish should prevent static build up and keep dust away for longer. It is worth noting however, that it only claims to prevent static build up on modern surfaces and it tells me that this has been "proven to work on vertical plastic surfaces and TV screens", no mention of horizontal surfaces or vertical surfaces made of other materials.
According to Mr. Sheen this polish also contains a longer lasting fragrance to ensure your house smells "just polished for longer"
This product comes in two scents - original and spring fresh. I own the original version and so I can't say how the spring fresh smells or works and therefore for the rest of this review assume I am talking about the original version.
The top of the spray is ribbed allowing plenty of grip, which means that your finger doesn't slip off this during use. The spray button is easy to press and releases a fine mist across the surface you are trying to clean. The directions say to spray this 23cm away from the surface you are trying to clean, however I have never measured this and my guess at distances has never been very good! It's pretty easy to tell if you're not close enough though as it won't reach, too close and you get a visibly thicker layer then you need so it's easy to tell if you're about the right distance.
After this has been sprayed on it leaves a thin transparent layer which you then just need to wipe off with a clean cloth. This is easy and has presented very few problems. The only problems I have found with this is when using it on computer and TV screens, the polish tends to collect around the sides however this can be fairly easily removed it just takes a little bit more work then other areas.
I have used this polish on windows, my tablet computer, wood surfaces and TV and computer screens and even my laptop keyboard! On all of these surfaces it's always cleaned them without any problems, removed fingerprints from the screens and brought out a shine to all kinds of materials. I have occasionally noticed a little bit of smearing on the edges of my TV screen however this doesn't occur on anything else and they are easily removed once I try to remove them so I'm assuming this is simply due to me not noticing them when I tried to clean it the first time; other then this, the polish leaves no other marks after use.
I would say that after polishing there is noticeably less dust collection for at least the next 2-3 days so I would say that this claim is correct. Although I didn't notice any static build up on any of the surfaces I polished I can't say that I noticed any before using this anyway so it's hard to say whether or not this is working in respect of this. Maybe it's something polishes do anyway and it's just been explicitly noted on this can?
As I said above I own and use the original fragrance which smells like any other furniture polish. However, despite claiming that the scent lingers I really haven't found this to be the case at all - in fact, after use the scent is barely noticeable. This is a bit of a shame since I love the smell of furniture polish but then maybe the spring fresh will linger a little longer as this will have an added scent.
The only real problem I have found with this is that the spray part itself ends up a little messy as white residue from the spray tends to build up there. This doesn't affect the way the can sprays at all, just looks a little messy.
As with any product of this nature this comes with several warnings. These are: this should not be used on antique or fine furniture, instead you should use a wax paste polish. It should also not be used on baths, showers or floors as the high shine will make them slippery and therefore dangerous.
The container is pressurised and therefore should be stored below 50 degrees and out of direct sunlight. You should not pierce or burn the contained even after use and the polish should be kept away from naked flames or incandescent materials. Finally, as with all cleaning products this should be kept out the reach of children.
Price, Availability And Recommendation
I buy my 300ml can from my corner shop for £1.20 I have also occasionally seen it in ASDA's although it doesn't seem to show online for me to get prices. This is also available on Amazon costing £6.73 for 2 450ml cans so as you can see it's worth shopping around to try and get the best price - can sizes also seem to vary depending on where you buy them from.
I would recommend this product, I'm docking a star due to the mess around the spray and the lack of lingering scent but other then those minor faults it does what it says on the tin. It cleans well on a variety of different surfaces and does appear to keep the dust away for a few days even if the other claims are difficult for me to quantify.
Summary: does what it says on the tin but I wish the scent would linger longer
