Persil Washing Up Liquid
Advantages: Cleans well, lasts longer, cheaper
Disadvantages: Lack of availability
I forgot to add washing up liquid to my shopping list recently, so when I ran out, I just walked down to the corner shop to get some. I saw this Persil washing up liquid and decided to buy it, as it was slightly cheaper than Fairy and probably also because the bright packaging stood out. It seems that I automatically always buy Fairy Liquid when I need washing up liquid - it's the main name for this kind of product and has always been heavily advertised.
This alternative from Persil comes in 4 different scents - Lemon Burst, Apple Fizz, Orange Crush and Pink Blush. I bought the Lemon Burst as that was the only one available! Like Fairy, it comes in a clear plastic bottle with a red plastic flip-top lid. The white label is white with the Persil logo, a picture of some lemon halves, and writing on it, saying 'bursting with zingy fragrance' (it is) and 'squeeze out up here for sparkling results' (thanks Persil, but I think I could figure that out myself). Personally I think the label looks like a child has done it but it's bright and stands out, so I guess that is not a bad thing. The liquid inside is a vivid clear lemon colour.
The smell of this was extremely lemony, smelling more so of lemon than generic washing up liquid smell. It wasn't too runny when squirted into the bowl, so you won't find this runs out quickly.
It created lots of bubbles when I ran hot water onto it.
Fairy boasts about how it lasts for ages because only a small amount gets results. This product is lasting just as long.
I found that when I was doing the dishes, I needed to scrub less to get any food or residue off my plates, saucepans etc. A few scrubs and the dirt was gone. Once out of the water, the dishes really did squeak when I ran my finger down them like in the advert! This also, according to the bottle, has anti-bacterial action, which is activated when used neat.
When my dishes dried, they were shiny, free from any residue or marks left by the bubbles, and were spotlessly clean. Was this down to my awesome washing up or the Persil? Well... almost certainly the latter.
I think the bubbles lasted longer than Fairy Liquid's do. Many times when I have had a large pile of dishes to do and have been using Fairy, towards the end the water is almost entirely bubble-free. Not so with this Persil washing up liquid. The back of the bottle actually does claim that in laboratory tests, it lasted 40% longer so it mustn't just be my imagination.
This is the second alternative to Fairy Liquid I have bought recently, the other one being Sainsbury's own brand washing up liquid, and I have preferred both over Fairy. It seems weird, given that Fairy is such a brand leader... maybe that's just me being odd rather than the product! Other washing up liquids do seem to model their bottles and labelling on Fairy but in this case I am glad it was only the packaging that was vaguely similar.
I have read that this product was relaunched in March 2011 but I have to say that my corner shop was the first time I have seen it, and it's not available on the Sainsbury's website. So I am not sure that this washing up liquid has a high level of availability. Shame.
I will be buying this again. Why? It's slightly cheaper (about £1.30 for 500ml); I like the smell; it works just as well, if not better than Fairy; and I love how it really does make dishes 'squeaky' clean.
Summary: Better than Fairy... if you can find it
