Advantages: It works and smells nice

Disadvantages: no child proof cap

I seem to have gone a little mad with the cleaning bug at the moment and have been tidying cupboards and cleaning rooms with more enthusiasm than usual. One of the problems with this is that I am going through cleaning products at a rate of knots.

One of my recent reviews was on Tesco's All Purpose Antibacterial spray and this is excellent for sinks, baths, worktops etc, however, for larger areas such as floors and whole walls and doors I usually use supermarket own brand equivalent of Flash - the well known lemon liquid that is added to water in a bowl or bucket to make an efficient cleaner for floors and larger areas.

So this week brought me to the cleaning aisle in Sainsbury's and here I spied Sainsbury's Basics All Purpose Cleaner - 750ml bottle for - wait for it - 26p!! It works out at 35p per litre as opposed to Flash at £1.98 per litre. Well, I couldn't resist.

The cleaner comes in a white bottle with a cut out handle on the side and a screw top lid. It has an orange and white label in the Basics style and that is it - nothing fancy - and the bottle is recyclable.

Inside the bottle is a pale yellow liquid which has a nice fragrance, slightly lemony and nice and clean and fresh smelling.

I tried it out straight away on my kitchen floor which was in need of a good wash thanks partly to my cat coming in and out with muddy paws! I followed the directions on the bottle and poured 2 capfuls into half a bucket of hot water, swirled it around a bit and then got washing. The paw marks and other grime was removed easily, even some greasy marks on the floor next to the cooker where hubby had been frying bacon disappeared without much effort from me. There is no need to rinse after applying the cleaner in this way so making the job quicker. I was pleased to see that there were no smeary marks when the floor dried and the kitchen was left with a nice clean smell. The directions advice that if cleaning smaller areas, a small amount should be applied neat and then rinsed clean.

Pleased with my success I went on to wash the paintwork in the utility room and the floor around the cat litter tray. The cleaner coped with everything brilliantly and the paintwork looked nice and clean afterwards and by looking at the colour of the water I could see that a good amount of grime had been removed easily and quickly.

The label advises that the cleaner is for hard surfaces only and should not be used on soft furnishings. Also, do remember to rinse hands thoroughly if not using rubber gloves to avoid irritation.

The only disadvantage I could see was that it doesn't have a child proof cap but as I always keep my cleaners in a cupboard with a childproof lock I didn't find this too much of a problem.

I am very impressed by this cleaner, it seems to do as good a job as other branded cleaners of the same type at a fraction of the cost. I will certainly be buying it again.

Summary: Excellent cleaner at rock bottom price
