Advantages: Effective and reasonably priced
Disadvantages: Not quite as naturally fragranced as I would have liked
If you've been following my previous reviews you will be aware that I love cleaning, particularly as I find it so therapeutic and I absolutely adore the fragrance of lavender due to the fact that I find it so calming and relaxing.
I recently read a review belonging to Pinklady who discussed her experience of using a lavender fragranced polish, so I simply had to go out and buy one for myself. The product I am reviewing today is Sainsbury's Lavender Furniture Polish, which is contained within a 300ml aerosol steel can.
I had previously been purchasing the Tesco brand of polish, but was more than willing to give this new product a try, particularly as I find myself shopping more in Sainsbury's these days due to Tesco's forever increasing prices.
Whilst the appearance of the product is somewhat plain, it most definitely caught my eye on the supermarket shelf. The lower section is silver with the upper section displaying a lavender coloured area, which contains an image of a white star. What I favour with this product is that there is no lid to remove and subsequently lose in the back of the cleaning cupboard!
The lavender coloured lid is incorporated into the upper section of the can and is easy to use by simply shaking well and pressing down to dispense the polish from the small opening at the rear. Whilst we are advised that the can should be held approximately 6 - 8 inches from the surface I always prefer to spray my duster as opposed to applying directly to the wood. Once the polish has been applied to the surface you should immediately dust with a soft cloth.
The creamy polish is of a good consistency and most definitely smells of lavender. Whilst it is not as natural smelling as the Tesco brand I have to say that the fragrance is extremely pleasant. Another positive for me is that the polish is not sticky unlike some of the cheaper brands. As the polish contains beeswax I had the assurance that it would bring out the natural beauty of my wood, which is what Sainsbury's claim. I have to say that I totally agree with this, particularly as the polish always leaves my surfaces looking absolutely beautiful with an added shine, together with a calming fresh lavender fragrance.
Whilst this product carries out the job for which it is intended, I always find that within a few hours the dust starts to resettle! However, in my opinion this is not the fault of the polish and is something that will happen regardless of the products we use, particularly when the sun is shining brightly and has a tendency to show up every speck of dust!
A few years ago I was using polish on my wooden surfaces up to five times per week and I noticed that they were becoming rather sticky and starting to lose their shine. It was only a few days later that I watched a television programme where the presenter advised that polish should only be used once a week in order to prevent a build-up, which will subsequently spoil the appearance of the wood.
Consequently, I have heeded the presenter's advice and will only use polish on a weekly basis. What I adore about this product is that the lavender fragrance will linger in your newly polished room for up to an hour after use, so you really feel that you have cleaned your home.
There is a little hazard information on the rear of the can where we are advised that this product is not recommended for use on French polished floors. We are also provided with extensive cautionary and safety information and as the can is flammable we should keep away from sunlight, do not smoke when using, do not pierce and keep away from naked flames. We are advised that the product should not be deliberately inhaled, it should be kept out of reach of children and should only be used in ventilated areas.
There is no recycling symbol on the rear of the can, so I am presuming that the empty can needs to be placed with ordinary household waste. The only symbol we are provided with is an image of a magnet, which informs us that the can is manufactured from steel.
Would I buy this product again? Yes, most definitely, particularly as it costs only 60p for a 300ml can. I have to admit that it doesn't smell as natural as the Tesco brand, but as the fragrance only lasts for up to an hour I really don't feel that this matters. Consequently, I think Sainsbury's Lavender Furniture Polish deserves 4 out of 5 stars.
I hope you found my review useful and would thank you for reading.
Summary: A great lavender polish from Sainsbury's
