SC Johnson Oust
Advantages: Eliminates Odours in a pacman like fashion...
Disadvantages: You need to get a smell you like (but this is common sense)
I don't generaly buy air freshner. I prefer to buy scented tealights for use in the kitchen and living room. The bathroom has a window and if the bathroom gets a little, shall we say, less fragrant, I just spray some deodorant around and open a window. So, I 've had no need to buy an air freshner until the weather became super cold these last few months and Mr Norton being a smoker, decided it was far too cold to go outside to smoke and started smoking in the house.
As I do not smoke, I started to find the stale smoke smell was lingering on my freshly washed work clothes and I was getting to work smelling like a night out so decisive action had to be taken! I didn't want to just whine and moan at Mr Norton as he is having a bad time with various things at the moment and the last thing he needs is a bridezilla outburst and so I bought an air freshner as compromise. He can smoke in the kitchen (and bedroom if it is late at night and he cannot sleep) on the condition he sprays this Oust Odour Eliminator around immediately after he has finished his cigarette.
I bought this Oust spray (I got the "clean scent" version) as it was on offer at 80p in Sainsburies when I did my monthly shop and I noticed it when I was scrolling through the offers on line. I have seen the Oust TV adverts over the years and when I think of Oust, I get the "it eliminates odours without just masking" slogan running though my brain. I watch far too much TV...! It comes in four scents: CITRUS, CLEAN, OUTDOOR, GARDEN FRESH. With different colour tops on the cans to mark the different scents. These sell for around £1 normally in Asda so are reasonably priced. I would not spend more than £1 on an air freshner as its just to make your house smell better- its not for me to wear!
We have had our can for 2 months and it is still half full and Mr Norton smokes quite a bit so it is getting used quite a lot and I feel we are getting value for money and my work clothes are not smelling of stale smoke anymore! Result!
The can sprays directly upwards when you press the nozzle button as the spray part is on the top of the can and not the front as you would expect it to be.
The "clean" scent smells like fabric conditioner. It has a very laundry scent which is quite nice. I would say the "clean" scent is very neutral- it could be used in any room- where some scents are more suited to a bathroom. I have not yet tried the Garden/ Outdoor or Citrus scents so I cannot comment on these but my guesses would be citrus- kitchen, outdoor- bathroom and garden- possibly floral?
The can describes the product as having "special formula neutralises bad odour molecules in the air such as pet/ bathroom/ smoke and musty/ mildew odours". This sounds as if the spray zooms around in the air like pac-man eating up all the "bad odour molecules" in a cartoon fashion. As we have been using this for 2 months and I find I cannot smell the stale smoke smell in the house or on my work clothes when I get to work (thankfully) I have come to the conclusion this does work and the bad smells/ smoke does go after you spray this around which I am happy with.
I think it is important to get a scent you can live with as you don't want the smell of the air freshner, sorry "odour neutraliser" to be Politically Correct .. ( well, it sounds PC ! ) to be worse than what it was supposed to be getting rid of. The smell lingers after you have sprayed it for around 20 minutes (at a rough count as I sprayed some just before).
Warnings on the pack are the general spray can things- do not breathe spray, highly flammable so do not smoke whilst spraying, keep away from sources of ignition, use in well ventialted areas etc.,
Overall- my impression of Oust made by the huge S C Johnson corporation is a brand name product I think I can trust to so what it says it will. When the current can runs out, if Mr Norton has not quit smoking or decided the weather is better so he can smoke in the garden, I will definitely buy another one of these- trying the other three scents to see if my guesses about how they will smell are correct.
Summary: Does the job
