SC Johnson Oust
Advantages: Price, if on offer
Disadvantages: Doesn't do what it claims
I'm not a fan of air fresheners at all, but recently one of our cats has been ill and has to stay indoors. This means a litter tray, and although it's out of the way in the conservatory, I have noticed that it starts to smell more on a sunny day. I had visitors over the weekend so air freshener it was.
Oust is well-known for claiming to eliminate the source of the smell rather than just masking it like other air fresheners - I think this is absolute rubbish as you aren't going to remove a smell without removing the thing that causes it. Maybe if you're cooking food or need to wash your feet then you can get rid of unpleasant lingering smells, but for pet smells or anything 'permanent' then it's not really going to work.
So really I only picked up Oust because it was on offer in my local Sainsbury's for just £1. The large metal can feels of good quality and it has a thick plastic lid with the spray function built-in. This is a good point for me as you just lose the lid anyway and it's just more plastic. I had the choice of 'Linen' or 'Outdoor' scents, and I went for Linen because the room already smells enough like the outdoors (!)
It was easy to hold and spray, and holding the button longer resulted in a fine mist that was more liquid than a powder spray, which was great apart from when I accidentally walked through it as it was falling and got wet. The smell was strong and pleasant, it wasn't particularly linen-y but it did smell clean and I couldn't smell the litter tray any more. I also put a gel Sainsbury's air freshener on the bookcase for extra support.
The smell lasted for a few hours but then I walked past and noticed it was becoming fairly strong again, despite the fact that none of the cats had used the tray during this time and it had been changed the evening before. I was unimpressed that Oust claimed to remove the source of the smell and clearly doesn't, which was my original thought. My parents also use this at house for the dog's room and it doesn't eliminate the smell there despite the fact it's just a general doggy smell, so it's not the fact that it was a litter tray that was the problem.
Obviously I don't want to be changing the litter tray every five minutes, but if you were using it in a bathroom or to just generally freshen a room then it would probably be okay - although I'm more of a fan of simply opening a window or turning on an extractor fan rather than constantly spraying chemicals. It costs money, I can't imagine it's good for the cats and it's not good for my throat.
It has a temporary effect and no different to other air fresheners really, so I'll be going off the price next time I buy air freshener, which probably won't be for a very long time!
Summary: It's average
