My boyfriend recently purchased a new rug for the lounge which wasn't very big but it was a black and white swirled design which meant that the white on the rug obviously got dirty rather quickly. This is due to our own fault of coming in rather merry from nights out and not removing out shoes before walked into the lounge. Although when hoovered the rug looks nice and new the white on the rug was looking rather dull and a little grubby so I decided I would give it a good clean to see if I could restore the white in it, rather than it looking like a dirty rug. I know there are various different carpet cleaners available to buy and I wasn't really sure which the best one was so my boyfriend decided to pick one up when he popped to our local B & Q.

The product is by Scotchgard and is a deep foaming carpet and rug cleaner which helps to remove tough stains leaving behind Scotchgard protector which has anti-coiling agents to protect against future resoiling. The products is suitable for colourfast rugs and carpets to help restore them, giving them a new look. I hadn't heard of this product until my boyfriend purchased it so I wasn't sure how well it was going to work. The foam would need rubbing into the rug with a mop or stiff brush. We decided to use a stiff scrubbing brush for this and it would then work its way into the rug giving it a really good clean. The product comes in a large metal can and it clearly states that the product is for Carpets & Rugs and has Scotchgard protection. On the front of the can it has 2 pictures showing you can use the product on carpet such as the stairs and in other rooms as well. On the back of the can it gives you some information about the product and it tells you how to use the product. It gives you diagrams as well and written information on how to use the product. You can also find a list of ingredients and safety information when using the product as well. The can has a large plastic lid which comes off easily to reveal the nozzle which you press down to dispense the product onto the carpet or rug that you need to clean.

The product was purchased from our local B & Q store for approximately £5.49 which we though was reasonable. You can also purchase this from other retailers such as Homebase.
Using the Product

It suggests using the product in a well-ventilated area due to the smell and the fumes that the product can give off. Due to the small flat me and my boyfriend live in we didn't have many places where we could do this and as it was raining outside we couldn't do it there either so we had to use the product in the lounge. We did how-ever do this just before we were due to go out for a birthday meal so hopefully by the time we came back the smell of the product wouldn't be so strong. Shake the can well before using the product. This was quite easy to do but the can is quite big and bulky and can feel a little heavy when shaking it so make sure you have a good grip of it. I took the white plastic cap off the top to reveal the button which sprays the foam onto the rug or carpet where it needs cleaning. This actually turned out to be a little messier than what I thought it would. Although the rug wasn't huge it wasn't really small either and I wanted to ensure that I covered the rug in a light layer of foam to ensure the whole of the rug was getting a good clean.
I pressed the button on the top and was shocked at how quickly the foam came out of the can. It shot out really quickly in a long line which ended up landing on the bottom of the sofa. . I clearly hadn't got the aim of the can correctly so I pointed it more downwards at the rug and again sprayed. This time the foam came out in a mist and landed nicely on the carpet. This was much better than the foam shooting out in a straight line as the speed it did. I sprayed the product all over the rug until there was a nice amount of foam on it. I learnt that if you pressed the button on the top hard then the foam would shoot out really quickly but if you pressed it lightly it would spray out covering a larger surface. I didn't read anything about this on the back of the can, and I did re-check it to ensure I wasn't being stupid. The foam does have a smell to it but it's not as strong as what I thought it was going to be and I was surprised at this.
After completing this, it states to use a mop or brush on the area to work the foam in. Using a scrubbing brush (also reviewed) I worked the foam into the rug to ensure that the whole rug was covered and has been scrubbed well. I concentrated on the white areas on the rug as these were the bits that needed cleaning the most. After I had scrubbed at the rug for a good 5 minutes with the brush most of the foam had soaked into the rug but there was still some left on the top. We then had to leave this to soak into the rug. The rug did feel quite wet when we left and we were out for at least 3 hours before returning to the flat. Surprisingly there wasn't much of a chemical smell from using the product despite living in a small flat and we couldn't really smell the product much at all. The rug now felt dry but it felt a little crusty and hard on the top which was a bit strange but we were hoping that this would disappear as soon as we hoovered the rug which were the next instructions on the can. I hoovered the rug very well a few times before switching it off to look at the results.
The rug now felt really soft, as soft as it had when we first purchased it and it no longer felt crusty from using the foam on it. The rug also looked really clean and looked as good as new. Although it was hard to tell how clean the black parts in the rug were the white parts were really clean and were now white again rather than a dirty looking colour. Me and my boyfriend were really impressed with the results, especially as it didn't really take that much effort to use the product. The product states that it leaves something called Scotchgard behind which helps to prevent the surface from future resoiling. I can't actually comment on this as the rug was only cleaned a few weeks ago and we now ensure we remove our shoes before entering the lounge no matter how merry or tipsy we may be.

The product was really easy to use and was in fact a lot easier to use than what I thought it would be. I think you do need to be careful when spraying the product as the nozzle on the top seems to be rather sensitive and you don't want to end up what I did which was spraying the sofa and the area around the rug with the foam. I think if you want to target a specific dirty area on a rug or carpet it's best to press down hard so you can apply the foam in the specific area but if you press lightly the foam will spray out covering a larger area to be treated. It's good that the product didn't have as much as a chemical smell as I expected, how-ever I would still advise to use this in a well-ventilated area. I actually sprayed the rug twice to get a nice covering of the foam on the rug as when I sprayed it first time it hadn't looked as though I had applied any. I would suggest applying this product before going out so you can leave the foam to work and dry into the rug or carpet which will produce better results. As the product was only used on a small rug we still have plenty of the product left and will be using it again when we need to. In terms of value I think the product is very reasonable and as I know this product works I would definitely purchase it again.
