I love using things that fragrance my home and often this will be a scented candle, I discovered Shearer Candles last year and in my opinion they are up there with Yankee Scented Candles, I tend to buy their Scented Candle Tins as I think they are good value for money. The last one I bought was from their Delice Aroma Collection which are delicious fragrances such as banoffee pie, strawberry milkshake, kiwi and lime mousse and the one I am using, tropical smoothie.
Shearer Candles are an established Scottish firm and claim they only use the "purist and finest ingredients" in their hand poured candles. I bought my Scented Candle Tin from Amazon where it cost me £3.50, Waitrose also have them for £5.00.
Shearer Scented Candle Tins are approximately 5cm's high and 8cm's in diameter so not that big really but they do state they will give up to 25 hours burning time. In the case of Tropical Smoothie the tin is silver and orange and has pictures of mango, melon and coconut on the front where it also informs the customer that this is a scented candle ad the fragrance is called Tropical Smoothie.
Shearer state that Tropical Smoothie is " sweet mango, melon and coconut which has been blended together to create an uplifting tropical vive"
When I got the candle tin I removed the lid and had a quick sniff of the orange coloured wax, it smells absolutely delicacies, the fruity smell is quite strong too. I lit the candle and waited for the fragrance to filter around the room. I didn't have to wait long, as soon as the wax started to melt the lovely tropical fragrance started to drift around. Its obvious that this is a fruity candle and all three fruits can be detected in the delicious aroma.
I really like this candle its so fresh and summery, the smell is quite strong but in no way too overpowering. I like to put this on in the daytime after I've cleaned and the whole of the downstairs of my house smells lovely, its what I would call a clean smell, it lasts well after the candle has been blown out too.
I have used about half of my candle and so far I would say 25 hours burning time isn't too far off the mark, the candle is burning down nice and evenly so there's no wax being wasted, if you like fruity fragrances then I can certainly recommend the Shearer Candle Tin, Tropical Smoothie, its fresh and fruity and just screams summer, which we could do with right now!. In my opinion the price isn't too bad and I like the fact that its in a tin so no wax drips anywhere although I would recommend standing it on a heat proof mat.
This is a fragrance I will definitely be buying again.
As the warm temperatures from the summer season begin to die down and I embrace Autumn with chapped lips and likewise lip salve at the ready, I also embrace the cold nights settling in with home made soup and enchanting candles filling the air with cosy scents. Of the usual scents I enjoy I also like Coconut but I find highly scented coconut candles hard to find sometimes and since purchasing another Shearer candle this month, which just happens to have coconut added, I decided to buy a small tinned candle to accompany the main purchase. This has resulted in the aptly named bright orange coloured tin candle "Tropical Smoothie," and comes from Shearer's Delice Aroma range, of which I've already tried their Kiwi & Lime version which was very successful, long lasting yet fruity and full of fun. Although not particular apt for Autumn, Tropical Smoothie appeals to me because of its cheery bright orange colouring and a passing scent that reminds me very much of my childhood chemical based fruit drink by Libby's known as the very popular "Um Bongo." Just because autumn in my mind conjures up darker nights and windier days with grey clouds doesn't mean I need a likewise dull looking candle in my home and the Delice Aroma range is marketed for entertaining as well as having around in the kitchen. Its bright colouring is extremely eye catching in both settings and at a cost of £5 per candle I bought two just incase I fancied giving one away as a gift!
Shearer has again hand poured the wax in this rather nifty tin sized candle and like the Kiwi & Lime, "Tropical Smoothie," by its very size is ideal for travelling with other than placing in the home. The design still offers the same kind of peace of mine for safety sake with its heat insulated base and handy lid that keeps the scent fresh and untainted after use. The tin itself measures 4cm height by 8.3ch diameter and could pass for a facial cream rather than an actual candle. The other two in a range of four from Delice Aroma ("Kiwi & Lime," is one out of that range, remember) is "Banoffie Pie," and "Strawberry Milkshake." Maybe one day I'll get the chance to try these two!
However when I lit the candle it took an hour before the scent of juicy melon and coconut began to filter through and the duo scent of melon and coconut is very heart warming from this candle. This is not the same type of scent like the Kiwi & Lime from the same range though as I find it takes a fairly long time for the fruity scents to fill a room and in some ways this isn't really a bad aspect. Then a most unexpectant surprise takes shape in the form of another scent coming through after two hours; sweet and ripe mango. It takes a fairly sensitive nose to pick out these flavoursome scents and if you don't like coconut that much, fear not - the majority of scent seems to be mango and melon with just a hint of coconut once the candle starts to fully melt down. It is fairly fragrant just by ingesting the scent of the hard wax the moment I open the lid, more of just coconut alone but a totally different story when the candle has been lit for some time! The candle itself only has a burning time of approximately 25 hours so it was just as well I could smell the trio of scents coming through.
When the candle burns it has a delightful clear orange look to it and whilst the base isn't cool to the touch, it is heat insulated enough to the point that it won't burn surfaces. My candle and candle number two (oh dear, I didn't give it away as a gift) suffered from poor burning until I realized the surfaces they were placed weren't level. To get the best out of the candle it really does have to be put on a level surface, otherwise the candle burns down the middle leaving a lot of wastage to the sides. The sides of the outer tin remain warm but never so hot that you'll need to grab the oven gloves! This kind of quality approach belies the quality of the tin itself, as it is quite flexible and thin feeling. The wick is also lead free which means it will bunch up into a tiny burnt ball once the candle is extinguished. This roughly means that it will have to be taken off but like all of Shearer candles, they are paraffin-free so there are no after tones of cough inducing toxins!
Where strength is concerned, outwardly Tropical Smoothie is quite understated and in a closed room, the candle tin will happily scent the room in a bath of fruity pleasing and uplifting tones. Unlike Kiwi & Lime however, it isn't as strong pervading through rooms and I rather like this aspect because at least I know which kind of candles in the Delice Aroma range are worth considering and for what kind of scenario or mood I'm in instead of having "one candle fits all" approach. Tropical Smoothie is also fairly good at controlling odour, particularly kitchen smells such as cooking oil, or masking fried prepared foods. Where tobacco is concerned, the candle does a good job of masking tobacco if a single person smokes. However for many smoking at a party or whilst entertaining guests, this kind of candle isn't strong enough to cover all of the tobacco in the room.
If you love fruity scents particularly Mango, Melon and a hint of Coconut, "Tropical Smoothie," is an apt candle. It may not shout from the roof tops that it has a particular Caribbean theme to it, but on its scent alone it is well worth considering if you find Yankee Candle a little bit too strong for its own good. I'd like to have this candle again at some point because it is very understated and at the same time smells exactly how Shearer describes it! Personally it needs just a little more scent to make top grade and in this respect the Kiwi and Lime candle tin is stronger. Thanks for reading. ©Nar2 2010
