Advantages: Easy to use, Excellent results, No smell, Cheap
Disadvantages: Limited availability, not everywhere sells it
When I moved into my new home and had to buy things to kit out the living room I had the brilliant idea of choosing glass furniture as it looked stylish, was relatively cheap and fitted in well with the overall scheme of my room. What I didn't take into consideration was the fact that glass looks lovely when it's clean but is a absolute dust magnet which shows up any and all blemish/fingerprint/speck of dirt that appears on it. I have a glass computer desk, television stand, shelving unit and coffee and side table in my room, a couple of them being black glass which is even worse for showing the slightest imperfection and everyday I have to clean them all just to rid them of the thin layer of dust that appears as if by magic simply to annoy me.
I've used Mr Muscle glass cleaner before but was put off by the strong vinegar smell that the solution left behind and whilst I don't mind using that for the inside of my windows I found that it left too much of an after-smell if I used it on my living room glass surfaces. Checking out other products designed for use on glass saw me stumble across the focus of this review, Stardrops glass cleaner, priced at just £1.00 from my local B&M store for a 750ml bottle I thought it might offer me something better than Mr Muscle so I was ready to take a chance on a brand I'd not seen since my childhood.
I remember the Stardrops brand from when my grandmother used one of the products in the range many years ago, it was a popular brand-name back then but over the years seems to have dropped out of the public eye a bit and now only seems to be available from discount stores rather than the larger supermarkets. The Non-Smear Glass Cleaner is packaged in a trigger release plastic bottle as shown in the supplied picture and is a light blue coloured liquid which apparently "gives glass & mirrors a sparkling finish". It has been formulated to be "smear free" and its "easy to use formula gives a lasting shine" according to my bottle, the directions for use are clearly printed on the back and it's simply a case of spraying the solution directly on to the surface you want to clean.
If you've ever used glass cleaners before you'll probably expect something that has a harsh vinegary smell to it but surprisingly this product from Stardrops doesn't have that nasal-attacking pong usually associated with products of this nature and instead is lightly fragranced with a gentle "clean" smell. I'd describe it as a soapy aroma rather than anything too acidic and once it has been sprayed and then wiped off it doesn't leave behind any nasty reminders that it has been used. It sprays from the bottle easily and as claimed it simply wipes off onto a piece of kitchen roll or dry cloth leaving behind a clean, smear free finish and shine.
It's brilliant in use in my living room, I've been using mine daily for coming up to 6 months now so a little of the product does go a long way and as far as cost-effectiveness goes I think it's been a terrific buy. It cleans all of my glass surfaces quickly and without any effort from me, I simply spray it on and then wipe it off, admittedly it will sometimes leave behind a couple of smears and streaks if I haven't wiped all of it before it's dried but that's more of a fault with my cleaning abilities than it is with the product itself.
I've used mine on the glass of picture frames as well as on the inside of my windows and have yet to find fault with it, the only thing that does let it down is its availability as unless you live close to a discount homeware store you'll be unlikely to find it and I do think it's a shame that it's not as widely stocked as some of the other brands available to buy. It's been the best glass cleaner I've used and I can't think of anything negative to say about its performance, for a quid a bottle you can't beat it I don't think and my 5 star rating here goes to prove how highly I regard it.
If it's available near to where you live and you have glass surfaces that attract dust and fingerprints then it's a must have product for your home and it's definitely recommended by me. Thanks for reading my review.
