Surcare Washing Up Liquid
Advantages: bubbly, cleans well, no additives or harsh chemicals
Disadvantages: leaves a stringy residue if not fully rinsed, dried my hands and made my nails flakey
Doing the daily household chores is never fun, but I hate to have dirty dishes lying around so I do a lot of washing up. I hadn't heard of the Surcare brand before but I decided to give this washing up liquid a try because it sounded nice and natural without any harsh additives. It is available from most supermarkets with the RRP of 88p for a 450ml bottle.
Product description: "With our hands exposed to the elements daily, it can be difficult to maintain the balance of the precious skin that covers them. With no added perfumes or dyes, Surcare washing up liquid is perfect for those looking for great cleaning without harsh chemicals. Suitable for sensitive skin."
This washing up liquid comes in a white plastic bottle with a flip top lid. Inside there is a small spout that allows you to dispense the washing up liquid by squeezing on the sides of the bottle. I prefer to have a clear bottle so you can see the level of product inside easily and you always know how much you have left. The liquid itself is completely colourless and does not contain any added perfumes or dyes.
To use, you simply add to a bowl of running hot water. I had wondered if this washing up liquid would match up to other more well-known brands but it appeared to be very good to start with and created a nice mass of bubbles from only a reasonably small measure of liquid. The bubbles last very well and I'll still have a bowl full of foam by the time I've finished doing the washing up, which is great as I still get the full cleaning power for the whole time that I'm washing. I was impressed that this liquid was really effective at getting my dishes clean. It worked quickly without requiring any excessive amount of scrubbing. The negative side to this seems to be that the dishes must be rinsed after washing. When I have not completely rinsed the dishes, they seem to have a weird stringy residue form on them which is quite unpleasant and means that they aren't as clean as they looked at first and need to be rinsed and/or washed again.
This washing up liquid is marketed as being suitable for sensitive skins, but I actually had more problems with it affecting my skin than I do usually. I found that after washing up with this liquid the skin on my hands felt dried out and I would always have to apply hand lotion straight away to get my moisture levels topped up again. Most of the time I wear nail polish, but on a couple of occasions when I had removed the polish and not yet reapplied it, the liquid seemed to also dry my nails out and left them looking flakey and damaged, especially at the tips. I wasn't happy with this at all as I try to take the time and effort to look after my skin and nails and this did not live up to its claims. I also really noticed the lack of fragrance and felt that this made it less enjoyable to use. I really like scented products and missed this while I was using the Surcare washing up liquid.
Overall, I cannot recommend Surcare washing up liquid. It does clean effectively but requires thorough rinsing and I would recommend wearing rubber gloves while using this to avoid the drying effect that it had on my skin and nails. I'll be going back to the mainstream brands and sticking with them from now on!
